Ok, can anyone out there fill me in? Ive been told by some (shall we say uncredible) peeps that you cant call glowstringing poi, because poi by definition deals with fire only. I dont know, can anybody help?
although some silly folks may have said so for the wrong reason, most people wouldnt call glowstringing poi. not because theyre not on fire (ask your friend what would i call my poi when they werent lit) but because they are not weighted. throw some tennis balls in a pair of tube socks- voila sock poi. try it and feel the huge difference between the two. so in conclusion, not poi but that also not for that reason.
Poi is also a ball shape (arguably, even while in sock poi), and you can have glow poi...which is a glowy ball thingie. And tell your friend and poi haven't always been on fire. There are some vids on youtube of traditional Maori dances with poi.
Basically, Poi is more weighted, and it is also extremely circle oriented, etc - you cannot do string manipulations with poi, no decent wrap combos with poi, not even spirals depending on what you are using. In a way, poi is even more limited than glowstringing, because you are using balls, not sticks. You can do essentially every poi move with glowsticks, however.
