I used to live in Phoenix, and we had all sorts different gigs going on, illegal, legal, live pa, etc... But everyone called the events raves. Parties were private and at houses. And the rave scene we have is probably the most mainstream in the US (Kandieland IV had 1700+ people and was totally legal/professional) But they were still raves?
I guess its a regional thing.
(Kandi kids are ravers too!)
