I think it might depend on how many people there are as well.

Well, if you're just throwing a small house party for 10-40 people, if your neighbors are cool and won't complain, you will probably be fine (if the neighbors DO call you in, you only get one warning and then it will be shut down and you will likely get a 'disturbing the peace' or other noise ordinance ticket)
As far as permits, I don't know for sure what they are, but I know that there is a somewhat extensive process you must go through to have it be 'legal' which you should want to do. You'd probably have to have security, adequate bathrooms, some sort of water/food given or sold, wrist bands, and maybe some other 'event permit' from the city, etc. Like I said, I'm not entirely sure, but there are channels you will need to go through.
Good luck!

depending if the venue is already equipted for people. if its a lil warehouse, or rental storage warehouse, either you renting it, or owning it,
depends on if this is jsut for fun like you said, so you wont be charging at the door, wont be serving alcohol,
depends on what the police say about what kind of zone the venue is in.
also, talk to city hall, and hte fire marshall.... if this is not already a legal venue.
if it is, you shouldnt have to do too much. id just call the police station. i cant tell you how much it will be. but it can be up to 5-10 thousand dollars, if its a big event. like the size of candyball,
firemarshal
police
town hall, city hall, county courthouse.
good luck
oh and i would refrain on the term rave.... save as much money as you can.
underground events can cost 1-5 thousand dollars to make it legal.

Yeah, I really can't stress to you that legal is the only way to go, though. Otherwise, it's easy to get it shut down which, in addition to being a major party kill for all those in attendance, could mean you getting tickets or even going to jail
So yeah, to through the correct channels and have a great time!

better of renting a cottage somewhere in a secluded area to avoid the cops getting involved n just save ur money you'll be suprized the places you could find. we started out with smaller partys and eventually worked our way up to like 3-4 hundred people out by this lake in michigan. in the end everyone had a blast ...n made some money to

I'de like to back up what Hwneyournext2me said, says its a party. When they ask what kind of a party say, a dance party/16th birthday party for my GF lol. Anyways, I believe the law said under 100 people does not requite a long list of warrants, call a lawyer, a question like this doesn't cost anything. Also, Cut back on the drugs, don't let people fuck them selves up, Im not saying no to drugs, Im just saying place limitors, locks on bedrooms, watch your bathroom, make sure valueables are not in the open like vases or such. I'm not sure how this would roll with the party goers, but renting a cop is avliable. When you have a man with a badge at the scene, the city and officals like it and won't be to prejudice about it... if you do happen to mention rave anywhere. Again, just a dance party, avoid the EDM thing too.

good advice from us all... the cottage thing will work as well. but you have to know the person, and persuade them to let you use the place for the weekend.
i know this is illegal, but when i was first going to RAVES in cny, we were going to houses being built, that were not finished. the ones all the way back in the caldisack.... lol we never got busted, and kept our eyes out for hte right locations, and the law as well. bring your own generator nad plenty of diesel.
yeah, dance party is what you say. for my sis or something. if you or she has friends over, that will be expected, its a b day party or wahtever kind of party it is... so they cant jsut say, well hey why is there so many people. you can reply she is popular... lol
