Smile man.... I'll chime in - 04-23-08, 11:35 PM

There are as many styles of dancing as there are of kung fu! Seriously though i think there are like 2000+ styles of kung fu....hmm... lesse it might be easier to state them by the methodology that's used in the dance... then you could really take any of them and mix them... say for instance...
liquid.... then popping... each is a style in its own right.. but then i've also seen them blended (as I danced that way for a number of years before working on new angles/styles), so would each incarnation be considered a new style? or just a blend of styles?
what I like to call the raver stomp
Then something else I've done that I can't really put a name to, but i usually do it with jump-up or D-n-B
poppin
locking
flexing
miming?
tutting
Hitting
ticking
geometrics
liquid
breaking (should this be split up into floor work and up-rock?)
crumping
all the classical styles (samba, salsa, merenge, tap, ballet, capoeira, jazz, ballroom etc etc)

Just my 2 cents

I just recently saw a preview of Dances of India, in Charlotte NC, which featured the traditional costumes and folk dances across the region. These dancers were pulling off some SICK moves. I saw some definite similarities in the speed and intensity of Indian dancing and how I dance at parties (and for all you ladies out there, this particular dance form is DEAD SEXY). Plus, Rabbit In the Moon have had Indian inspired performers at their shows in the past, and the crowd is always left mesmerized.

Flexing is an element that fits under the broad umbrella of popping (in my opinion), you can pop without flexing but it looks a little different. I've seen a couple guys up in new england dance using almost all flexing with an occasional hit or liquid'esq movement in there. Miming is to mimic (as in a mime... which works out really well to music). Geometrics can really be interpreted in two different ways... it's what I like to think of as a type of tutting... there is also a more traditional approach to geoemtrics which is the concept of tracing or dancing out elaborate patterns on the dancefloor.. of course if you weren't looking from above you might not notice it. I should say that it's hard to really break up a lot of the street or freestyle dancing into types of dancing as it is to focus on the techniques that embody an effect. Usually when i get inspired I usually go off by myself and explore the movement.. starting with imitation (which is the highest form of compliment to another dancer).. once I understand the movement then I re-invent it with my own personal twist to it... But when I'm out dancing, it all comes out, depending on how i feel how, how much energy I have, what kind of music is playing, what dj is playing... how much dance space there is... etc et. etc..

All these names for different styles. That's crazy. I always figured just get out there and move your body to the beat.

You'd think, Daisy. but some people, people like me, try to do that and end up looking like they're having a seisure. sometimes having styles and moves and directions helps.

Well maybe Seisure should be it's own type of dance. =)

Or Goofalupagus...kind of like that Snuffuluagus off or Sesame Street. I know that spelling is TERRIBLE.

wow C-walking is not a dance, an should not c treated as such, its a form of communication, its not a joke or a dance do not do it if you are not a Crip, C-walking in the clown walking variation is a joke but a not funny joke, it may make you feel cool to do around your friends or infront of people you do not know, but one day you may run into the wrong person an end up in a situation you are no way prepared to deal with, an plus ya'll forgot the Wutang, now thats a cool dance, just tie sum glow sticcs to your shoe laces or hold sum in your hands an it looks really cool...
