Default Cdj? - 08-29-08, 08:00 AM

i was thinking about getting a dj set.
i heard that vinyl were better for scratching which i would probably do quite a bit, but there are like no vinyl where i am for the moment.
but i heard cdj were good for beginners and mixing.

i probably won't get one for a long time but just like to think about the possibilities. about to get a shitty job so just want to pre plan.

Just about all DJ's these days have to order online for there vinyl,
www.dancerecords.com
www.hardbeatstore.com
www.imorecords.com
are just a few
if you want to scratch deffinately go with vinyl, and dont get a cheap turntable if your gonna be scratching because your gonna need the torque that only a quality table is gonna have (I.E Technics)
I started out with turntables and then added two cdj's (dont even consider any other brand for CDJ'S except Pioneer) into the setup which is was most DJ's have these days, and really is the ideal setup.

Get standard turntables first. Learn to spin and manipulate vinyl. then you don't need CDJs.

Also... if you just mix CDs and can't spin vinyl... then you'll have no credibility as a DJ. We have standards in this scene. Vinyl is one of the most important ones.
So make sure to START with vinyl. After you really get the hang of it, then you can use CDs to enhance your set.

Eh im really gonna have to disagree with this man,
The same skills apply no matter what format your mixing, Now its true some genre's use vinyl more heavily then others, and its always preferable to use vinyl just cuz it feeeels sooo much better then cd's, if your a good dj your a good dj no matter what format your using, people hire you for your skills not because you do or dont spin vinyl

All because of you
I believe in angels.
Not the kind with wings,
No, not the kind with halos;
The kind that bring you home
When home becomes a strange place.
I'll follow your voice;
All you have to do is

Eezer- you're right. in the end, it's about what comes out of that soundsystem. But there are tricks you can do on CD decks that you can't do with vinyl, but then there are many tricks that a CD deck can't imitate, like hitting the stop button for that slow stop, doing needle drops, and other technical skills.

For someone just learning to mix, though you won't need all the extra frills on CD decks. Also, keep in mind when mixing digital, you cannot see the grooves. You can't see where you are in the track other than the little progress bar on the display. On vinyl, you can clearly see in the grooves where the intro, breakdown, drop, groove, mid-drop, and runout are. This makes mixing MUCH easier, and efficient. And you'll learn that there are Many times where you'll need to just drop the needle on that record and find your break right away. You can't do that with CDs... you have to wait while you fast forward, which loses valuable mixing time.

So for a beginner, I firmly stand by my endorsement for vinyl decks.
Make sure to check your local message boards, craigslist, and ebay for great deals on used Technics.

Just remember: do your mixing in your headphones and get it locked in before you turn up the fader. And NEVER touch the platter while the track is playing. Always use the pitch adjust!!
