Dighital record needles?

Are they posible? do they exist? i had a dream i got this cartridge, that instead of having a needle it had a laser that read the depth of each groove and played it just like a normal needle, sept you would never need to replace it, and you would never wear out ur records! alota other crazy things happened in that dream but the idea of a laser needle stuck with me.... my only thought is, needles are pretty good at reading through a bit of grime and dust, would a laser get thrown off by any speck? DISCUSS!

The only way this would be possible is to alternate between ir senders and receivers. The sender would need a very small viewing angle as to not catch extra grooves and such. It's possible, it wouldn't be a visible laser like people would think but it wouldn't ever wear out your records and depending on the ir led's used can last anywhere from 10,000 hours to 100,000 so it would have a very long life. They also would be very easy to replace seeing as you can pick up ir's at your local radioshack or whatever.

I'm actually tempted to make one. But then I would start doing really bad in school and would focus all my attention on it. So it's a possiblity but it is very complicated.

for real man, MAKE IT! what happened to the entrepreneurial spirit? its a great idea for an invention and if u can really pull it off, it would be a HUGE advancement in technology. i'd deff buy it! and im pretty sure if u had a good working version, a company like ortofon would lay out some cash to buy the patent.

well, cd is essentially read this way yea?? so y not a vinyl groove?? altho idk how the laser reads a groove as compared 2 how a needle (ok stylus.. be quiet..) reads the groove.. the more coverage u get in the groove the better the quality, right?? like how an oval needle versus a round needle reads.. the laser could get full coverage of the groove so it would seem u'd get a badass full range sound.. and the laser wouldn't collect dust goin round like a stylus does so just that alone would take out much of the scratchiness.. i bet it'd sound pretty clean.. i'm also high and seriously tranced out on some killer vocal trance and am most likely talking directly out of my ass.. have a lovely day!!
