Well, i got my first gig coming up, its a pretty big house party/house rave. date is still shady but it will be around the 4th of july. i defiantly have NOT been djing long enough to be playing out, but i guess im gonna do it anyway..... any tips? any tips on preparation for it? i think im gonna wright out a set list befor hand so i can just work on that and hopfully make up for my inexperience. Any helpfull words will be appreciated!
If you dont feel ready it would be a good idea to have something planned out. Being comfortable is key even for a seasoned pro.
You dont want to blow you're first gig but how can you turn it down...? Just put a set together...make it nice and clean...no one will know and hopefully you'll get booked again.
First off, congratulations on your first gig! I can barely remember mine, but then again that was many, many, moons ago. I’ll give you some good prep pointers that I have learned:
If you are playing vinyl make sure you have the BPMs listed somewhere for quick reference. Nothing says hilarity to me then watching some DJ try to mix a 93BPM song with a 138BBPM song. If you are using CD’s make the Cd’s compliment each other. Track 1 on CD 1 can be mixed with track 1,2,3 on CD 2. Track 1 on CD 2 can be mixed with Track 2,3,4 on CD 1. You can basically structure a two and a half hour set using this method.
There is, and will be someone to request a song that won’t fit in the mix, or you won’t have. It’s a fact of life when you are spinning. But be polite when the requests come. Politely say that you will look for the track, and you will try to put it in the mix if it compliments the music. If a few people ask you for a certain style of music, that usually means the floor is needing a small change in the music. To make the beast happy drop a track or two of that style then go back to what you were doing. However, if someone asks for Girl Talk, punch them in the face and tell them, that donkey excrement does not work on my turntables/CD players. Then offer them to teach them how they can be Girl Talk by teaching them how to load a bunch of tracks in a sequencer software and pressing play then dance around for two hours like Richard Simmons.
Most importantly relax and have fun. Seriously, smile a bit, point to the crowd, dance with the ladies. If the mix gets so damn good and the energy is hype, jump up and down, or get on your knees and thank the music gods for a perfect mix. If you screw a mix up, don’t worry about it and continue on. Most “normies” (people who do not DJ or have no musical performance concept.) cannot tell if a mix is messed up or not. Granted if it’s not too bad.
Anyway, I hope this helps you out a bit. And good luck!
Holy crap that smily has a green flame thrower!
If it's a house party, most will be so f'd up on the koolaid it won't matter. Just have fun and be excited. If you're getting in to it. So will everyone else and it might just get you
