Default headphones - 03-11-08, 03:35 AM

so i want to try some new headphones.

i've been using the sony mdr-v700 (the silver ones EVERYONE has) for at least 3-4 years now, had a couple pairs. they're good headphones and i would just get another pair BUT...

im wondering if im missing out on better headphones by sticking to these. there might be some that are better for me that i just dont know about since i havent tried them. i tried the Pioneers that seem popular but i dont like them very much, they dont seem very sturdy. i checked out some Sennheisers (which can be expensive) since they seem to be used by some top dj's, but they were really wide and bulky and looked odd. havent tested them out for sound but they have the same frequency response as the others do. my other choice is the technics which honestly will probably kick ass but ive heard from Stylez (brian, smooth productionz) that they feel too small.

so what's the word, people, any inside info to share?

http://www.ultrasone.com/ they make reaaaly high end gear. they design them so you get less ear fatigue as well wich is great. I have a pair from the "pro" series for my studio, i havnt tried anything from there dj line. they are realy natural, realy comfortable and the wire unscrewes so if it gets shredded in there u can just swap it out. mine also came with extra ear pad thingies (idk the name for them but they are fuzzy!!). uhh what els can i say for them. oh they bass responce on mine isnt as kicking as i'd like it to be, but i think that may be becuase the rest of my gear is a little muddy so i mix a little thin. SPEEKING of wich, they have a HUG range of frequencies they can make. realy articulate on the high end, but never a ton of noise cancellation. okay theres my little review for ya! haha.
I also use a pair of ath m40fs they are... meh. comfy, but they are muddy, not very good on the top end.
i wouldnt recomend the ath m20.... thy were toyish, 2 light 2 small, no pop. they were just dog crap.
i'd say do some research on ulstrasone's dj series, i know there head phones can be expensive ( they used 2 have a pair that was over a grand, i got mine for 700) but they are great.

Oh i just did a little research for ya. S logic wraps the sound around ur head. Instead of shooting the sound right into ur eardrum (which never made sence to me) It bounces the sound off ur outer ear that way you get a natural surround sound, and it makes it feel like ur listeneing through speekers. It also makes it safer, less ear damadge. ANOTHER thing is the headphones give off alot less radiation then other head phones cuz they put in a metal sheild to cut that down. Ultrasone is a realy foward thinking company. idk how needed some of these things are for DJing, but for producing and mixing in a studio, they could be greatly helpfull for your mixes especialy if you do alot of interesting panning, and wrapping pans. alllright, i feel like a spokesperson now....

they look nice!! and i bet they sound very full and brite!

there are gonna be many headphones to choose from,

i buy on these laws,
quality
warrenty
price

and how long they might last is usually the factor if i buy it again..

im stuck with the sony 500's i cant fit anything on my head that is as confortable... everythign else seems bulky or heavy... i like the smaller framed headphones.

also crutchfeild.com
partexpress.com

marrantz, and mcintosh, make very high quality stuff here..

me too - I have a little head...which is why I've been clinging to my sonys like grim death, even though they're pretty shot. Model MDR-V600 (I don't even know if Sony makes them anymore). I don't know how they are for DJing, but I used to use them when I was mixing for a band and doing live recording of a show or heavy monitor mixing...not the greatest noise canceling, but they will get the job done and they weren't horrifyingly expensive...

If you find something great post it, cause I'm in the market for new phones too...

I haven't tried out these particular ones, but the bose phones that I've had on are pretty super sweet...but VERY pricey.

as far as the around ear/over ear debate...I really think it's personal preference. I like the around ear because they don't screw with my cartilage piercings, but I know people who swear by both.
