record with the actual record volume low and just turn the post-recording speakers up while you mix. that way you will hear it as loud as you want, be able to keep the levels steady throughout since you can hear it well, and the mix will be recorded solid but quiet. then when you are done, you can just normalize the whole thing and there wont be any clipping.

as far as different records being quieter or louder, thats just part of being a dj. you need to know your records and mix them according to how loud they are; if you rely on programs to do that for you, it will sound like shit when you mix live if you dont get good at keeping the level the same through the whole set.

also (and lots of people do this) DONT turn a song up louder than the mix has been previously just because you like a song. thats what you do when you listen in your car, but doing it in a mix is weird, abrupt, and takes people out of the mood. the whole mix should be uniform; people listening to them ix may not like the same tracks you do and they will turn it up if they like what they hear.

i do try to practice these habbits. and you may be surprised to hear, btu when i record , i sue the headphones... mainly for everything. i dont rely on my monitors, they are pasive, and inexpensive. i feel i et s more solid mix when i can hear the sounds tighter to my ears. i dont use a split cue, but stereo... ironic. i read a thread off unnet.net, about using headphones to mix,,, and how it said it cant be done... but i do. and it sounds way better,,, unless i had real, booth or studio monitors. after playing the stereo loud for a while, i can hear some crappy noises out the speakas, and i think the amp and speakers are old adn just need to be replaced. same for the mixer.

the behringer has one red, three yellow, and six green leds to indicate teh signal strength. i was playing it too loud, the mixers capacity to hold that strenght of a signal is weak. i have to keep everything in the green and solid green for a nice sound. it has helped me to turn it down. and i use the headhphone cue level to increase so i get a nice solid level in my ears.

turnign the new track ive cued up down all the way, but adjsuting my curve on the headphone, so i can still hear it, helps, and using the cross fader to blend it in, and then adjust the level and eq up to the same signal strength as the previous track, but in time... when the current track gets softer, i will adjust the new track to compensate... adn back and forth a few times till the old track is out, and im green all the way up in the new track.

i jsut made another electrobreaks set tonight. although i hadnt recorded it... just roughly put the tracks together, and now i have an order to follow. now i will spend time working the mixes to get them to blend together. and thus remembering the cue points, and which track may be louder,,, or quiter... and well after a few times of going over and over through the set, i will record. i have only twice recorded throwing tracks together... i think for me, i like workign them together...

that doesnt mean the track order is best.. but i work at it. everyday. for a few hours... everyday lol its not that easy. but it is fun i dance when i mix and get into it everytime. as if i was playing out, and having to deliver the energy to a crowd.

learning t orad a crowd is beyond me right now. i ahve not had enough face time in a club or venue. i would prefer having a set made up, and maybe have a bunch of variable tracks i can throw in there if they get bored. i dk. havent been there... i only have played for friends or at a small veneu in tulsa which never got hype about anything,. they jsut get drunk. so, im working on it. ive lost my grip at home here, and im moving out this weekend. ive had issue with the roomate, eating my food, pissign on the floor, comign home drunk at 3 a,m with the tv so loud all the rest of us wake up,,,, and such im very stressed and upset, tonight was not a good night, except before he jsut got home,,, iwas mixing for three hours, and putting together a set. wtf?

WHOA WHOA WHOA.

that high quality is SOOOOO unnecessary. thats a higher quality than the music you are mixing was made in the first place!! record your mixes at 48khz or 44.1, going any higher in sampling quality probably wont even be able to be heard on any speakers you have anyway. that high of quality is used for recording live orchestras and shit. the cd's you buy at the store are only 44.1khz; thats sound being sampled 44,100 times every second.
