Well I have been djing for about 14 years now and it is a lot easier to get started now than when then when I did. There are a few things to consider
do you want vinyl, which has a more direct feel, the equipment is not as expensive, but vinyl can be pricey. Also if you can learn to spin with vinyl then cd turntables will be a lot easier to learn, the learning curve in the other direction is much, much steeper as you will have to almost relearn how spin to develop a sense of touch on vinyl and mix a little different. However cd singles to spin are a lot cheaper to buy than vinyl, but decent equipment can be a little more expensive, but you have more flexibility in your mix as to the things you can do with a cd turntable. But most important is to figure out what kind of music you are passionate about and start from there. Your passion and love will not only show in your track selection but also in your mix as well.

That’s a good start. What about the circle of 5ths, cents, dynamics, intervals, scales, inverted triads, harmonics, Speech and vocal synthesis processing, MIDI control and implementation, electrical wiring and repair, mixer signal routing? Those are some good concepts to learn as well.

The thing is you have to figure out how serious you are about it. If not you will just waste your money. I mean I have met people who go all out and buy two 12’s, a new laptop, a 57 and it all just sits there and they never use it. That’s almost $5000 worth of equipment that is collecting dust. You should also do a cost analysis as well. If you are really just starting buy a crummy $300 Gemini set-up. If you really love DJing you will destroy it in 6 months. If you don’t destroy it through everyday use, chances are you don’t love DJing as much as you thought. If you do destroy it, at that point buy some 1200’s or some mid-range single load CD decks. You won’t ever destroy 1200’s, but if you wear out the laser in the CD deck or you are constantly taking apart a 1200 to marvel at its simple and superior design, (or in my case modifying brake, start up speeds, or adding circuitry to process MIDI and DMX signals) chances are you do love DJing. The thing of it is you have got to ask yourself will this be a hobby or a career? And let me tell you, don’t get either of those confused.

Vinyl can be expensive if bought retail. Looking anywhere from $5-$12. Your best bet is to find stuff you like on ebay. Or if you just want a bunch of records there are a good bit of DJs on ebay that sell record lots. Usually you can get 50 for like $100. I don’t know anything about hardcore or drum and bass, but I imagine there are record pools for this sort of stuff. Build yourself a rep and you may get asked to join one. The downside to record pools is that they are pretty exclusive, they have dues (The average is about $200 a month), and you might get a bunch of crap records at times. However the upside to them is that depending on the prestige of the pool, you will get some stuff that is never released to the public or you will get tracks that won’t even reach radio play for months, your opinions of the tracks can influence music charts, and you may even have direct/indirect connections to the labels themselves. The main point is…try to avoid buying retail.
