Here's a few question for us to help us learn our GXG DJs.
1. How long have you been Djing and what got you interested in it?
Messing around with it since about 2000, seriously since 2003. What got me interested was hearing the same shit of the same genre and not really alot of stuff that was outside what was the status quo, so I was like "fuck it, I can do better than that". Mainly started because I love music, the way it mixes together, and the new sounds that result from blending two songs together. Playing in actual clubs and bars just kind of evolved from people finding out I was a DJ and liking my stuff.
2. How did you come up with your name?
It's my actual name. I'm "Jasper Land" on flyers.... yea, it's really my last name. rofl. (I get asked that alot)
3. What type of tracks are you playing?
D&B, Psytrance, Neuro I have a passion for, Trance/House/Techno/Breaks/Hardcore/ and EBM (not to be confused with EDM although that encompasses most of what I'm posting so that too), Industrial, Rock, Rap, Hip Hop... Fuck even Pop sometimes but usually mixed over something else... honestly if it sounds good, I'll play it. And other stuff depending on the crowd. I really don't like the meticulous labeling of music and hate the whole sub-genre crap. Music is music, labels sell it. Yes, I'll play all those genres together. They mix, I promise.
4. Do you have a favorite big name DJ?
Lots, not going to list them all out. Anyone cutting edge and spinning stuff you don't hear around wherever they're spinning (and might not even be popular though it's very good music) I have great respect for. Honestly it's not about the DJ, it's about the producers more than the DJ's, but the BIGGEST thing it's about is the music, not someone's ego.
5. Where and how often do you spin?
I'm living in Charlotte NC at the moment, as far as the actual venues, Depends on my school schedule and all the other shit in my life, Spinning @ Alloy every month, house parties, afterparties for friends, club parties when I have the time and someone invites me out... my house ALOT. haha.

It's your fault for asking, cuz mine is gonna be long. LOL!
1. How long have you been Djing and what got you interested in it?
In the summer of 2004, a friend of mine convinced me to go to a party at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, where her DJ boyfriend (Scooby) was spinning on The Boat. The Boat, it turns out, was/is The Celebration, a two-story 200-person party cruise boat. I had a great time, saw a live DJ for the first time, started thinking about getting into that. Kept going to parties down at that lodge (met the owner, really cool guy, loves EDM but you wouldn't think it to look at him) but it wasn't until the first July weekend of 2007 that I decided I wanted in. A party called Escape in the Beats. Friday afternoon through Monday morning. Disco House Cruise on Friday night with Scooby headlining, a past college roommate was there and spinning, and I hadn't seen him since I left college. It was the best weekend ever, and I decided I had to be a part of the next one. I wanted to be a DJ. That November I got a cheap rig, American Audio. Only had a couple records, not enough to start learning to beatmatch, and no good record stores in St. Louis. Wasn't until the first weekend of February 08 when I got some records. Scooby and I made a trip to Chicago where my ex-roommate DJ friend (Jake) lives and, Jake is pretty much ALL Serato, so he hooked me up with maybe 20 of the records that got HIM started, and that's when I began practicing in earnest. Memorial Weekend 2008 was my first time playing out, at Escape in the Beats 2, and I don't mind saying it myself, I tore the place up.
So, really, I've been spinning for a little over 9 months.
2. How did you come up with your name?
*sigh* Hoo, boy. Here we go: My freshman year in college I shared a dorm room with two French exchange students who, along with being very cool and only slightly stereotypically French, enjoyed watching movies and staying up until the wee hours of the morning watching them. So, consequently, it was common to see me walking down the hall at 4am towards the drinking fountain with glass-in-hand, looking like I'm sleepwalking. Therefore, my hallway nicknamed me Sleepwalker.
A year or so later, I'm signing up for an internet forum somewhere, and still carrying the Sleepwalker nickname with me, that was my login name. I had a habit on this board of signing the end of all my posts with ~~Sleepy~~. Well, one night (keep in mind, I'm still in college), I come home not just drunk, but DRIZZUNK. And I attempted to make a post on the forum, because we had a tradition of making drunk posts to amuse the sober people. I was so drunk, in fact, that I screwed up and instead of signing the post ~~Sleepy~~ I signed it something like ~`speely~~.
From that day forward, no one on that forum called me anything but Speely.
Years go by. I'm signing up for a Myspace account, and trying variations on Sleepwalker or Sleepy for my myspace link or whatever, but everything I can think of that doesn't involve random numbers is used up. At this point I was goofing around with FL Studio a bit and I'd just seen the movie Groove, so on a whim I punched in dj_speely, and bingo, it took it. Damn, now it's stuck. Oh well, no big deal, no one sees it, right?
Wrong. Last year, after I had made the decision that I wanted to be a DJ, my ex-roommate DJ friend Jake happened to see that dj_speely on my Myspace account. For Jake, it is no small leap to take Speely, think of Steely Dan (the band), and combine them into Speely Dan. So, for a few months, I was Speely Dan, at least in Jake's head.
Then, when Scooby and I spent a weekend in Chicago with Jake, all I heard - from anybody - all weekend long - was "Hey, Speely Dan" this, and "G'mornin' Speely Dan" that, and "Speely Dan, come check this out" and so on and so forth. By the end of the weekend, I had been named and there wasn't anything I could do about it. Now that Scooby and I have moved to Chicago with Jake and another musician/DJ friend of ours, it's been informally shortened to just Speely, but on business cards, flyers, etc. I am Speely Dan.
Not that I'm complaining, honestly. I think it's pretty cool, it ALWAYS makes people ask where it comes from, I like Steely Dan anyway so to me it's a good association, and I now have an involved, and amusing, story to tell whenever anyone asks.
On the downside, it can get a little confusing because my name isn't Dan, it's Matt. But some people hear it and think my name is Dan. This gets even more confusing because Scooby's name really IS Dan. Living in this house is a lot of fun sometimes.
3. What type of tracks are you playing?
When I got started I was on a huge Vocal House kick, a lot of house-y remixes of songs (Love Foolosophy, Roxanne) and stuff like that, with a few borderline tracks too (Amanda Ghost, Filthy Mind; Andreas Johnson, Glorious) but almost entirely Vocal. For the past few months I've been working hard to extend my musical vocabulary while staying within the House genre, and I've been working with a lot of funky and electro house lately, maybe a little Disco once in a while.
4. Do you have a favorite big name DJ?
Bad. Boy. Bill.
Oh, and Richard "Humpty" Vission.
The House Connections CD's are my lifeblood.
5. Where and how often do you spin?
Currently, nowhere and not nearly often enough. It's tough being a n00b, talented or not. I spun at Escape in the Beats 2 as the opening performance, and will be headlining at Escape 3. I've spun a couple house parties here and there, and was VERY pleased to discover The 10 Things You Should Never Say to a DJ. It goes on very early in my set when I spin at a party.
