Default Need Remix Assistance - 06-01-08, 07:02 AM

So, I am doing my first remix done completely using a DAW. I have recorded bands for years, and am very familiar with protools and reason, but a buddy talked me in to trying FL Studio 7. Problem is, I'm stuck. I don't really get the interface or the instruments. It all seems very counter-intuitive.

What I need is any feedback at all that anyone here can give me on what I am doing wrong.

Basically, I chopped the a capella track into basic verse/chorus sections. Then I built drums, bass, etc completely in the piano roll for the various instruments. Chopped the instrumental all to shit to get the different transitions and samples for chorus, etc.

Now it sounds all dumb and empty to me. Not sure what I am missing. Never tried this before and I am getting frustrated to the point of not trying again.

Maybe I should just stick to vinyl????

Here she is in gloriously compressed mp3 format:

Please remember, no automation yet. No sweeps or fun sound effects. This is just a barebones example. I just don't want to start adding any fun stuff until I get this sounding right.

Thanks in advance for any advice/tips/tricks/bj's.........

OK I'm not really expecting the last one. Or am I???????

Song is Wiz Khalifa - Say Yeah

I was hesitating to add comp's until I figured out that thin sound in the instruments.

Your comment helped me fix that problem. Turns out not only was the gated noise out of tune, but the bass was as well. Just changed the pitch by a few cents on each instrument and everything fattened up. Fucking beginner shit is always what gets you. (Why wont the computer turn on? Is it plugged in? kind of situation)

Not only did the bass fatten up, but the modulation on the attack is much more audible and everything is generally more punchy.

Thanks a million for pointing out the obvious essi.

One more q for anyone who might know: The main 4 bar sample I am using in the chorus - with the 808 hit at the beginning - is clipping like a mofo. I have tried every trick in my bag to fix it, to no avail. Anyone know any fancy tricks for getting rid of clips on audio samples? (Besides recutting it, that is)
