Default Need some advice - 05-26-08, 08:16 PM

I have decided to finally try my hand at DJing. Probably gonna be buying equipment in the next few weeks. So my question to everyone is if I should get turntables with Serrato, or just get CDJ's? I keep hearing good and bad about both setups. Any advice that you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!!!

OK short but long answer first i'll start with the benefits
Serato= Just like vinyl and great for turntabilist's
Stable Program that is consistently updated with user requests.

CDj's
Cheaper then the setup your going to need for serato,

Honestly if your not into turntabilism i cant justify spending the money on serato. with serato you will need a laptop *preferrably mac* two good turntables, a mixer, and ofcourse serato and some kinda speaker system. probably gonna run ya over 2k for all that.

With cdjs obviously u need two cdjs *i recommend pioneer cdj200 if yer just starting out there fantastic and the best u can get for the money* A mixer, headphones and ofcourse some kinda speaker system.

I dont know what yer money situation is like but it all comes down to preference do u want to feel like your using vinyl? and be able to use real vinyl. or do you want the cheapest best setup you can get for your money *personally i like a little of both*
P.S. this was a bit of a rush cuz i gotta get to work but when i get back i'll elaborate on it all heh

i think overall you should have vinyls, and cdj's so just pick one for now. cdj's may be a little less pricey, and the cost of vinyls, nad turntables adds up. although, the ultimate dj would probably use sd cards, cd's and vinyls. that should inculde using ableton, or serroto. get what your budget can handle to get you started so you can mix, rather than having to wait to save more money, to get hte next peice of equipment before you can spin... imo.

personally if u can afford it i say serato. more possibilities imo. U get the feel of vinyl but every update or plugin they make for it is like adding a new feature for ur turntables. The visual aid also is a big help, i dont mean in beat matching, but i mean being able to see what happens later in the song quickly and easily, and even what frequencies its happening at. helps alot when u dont know every song great, and is much easier than squinting, tryin to read the grooves of the vinyl. instant doubles is a huge plus, and im always for oldschool meets newschool, and thats exactly what scratch live is. I just got it, im loving it. really improving my juggling skills since i have doubles of everything now. Well thats my humble two cents. I wish you the best of luck!

pure and simpl etry and go a traktor or serato setup you aint gonna get anywhere reading bpm off a cdj thats what i am finding allot of up and comeing djs are getting drawn into, they get so used to reading the bpm that they forget its all about training ur ears not matching two numbers together and when they are tossed infront of a set of vinyl decks they have no clue and it is tragedy lol.

go vinyl forsure it has eccerything over cdjs cept cues and loops but most mixers offer loops and serato or trctor have cue only have to worry about minor issues if you are useing a peice of waxx with music on it mixer wise you will only need 2 chaneles and i assume you would want FX i recomend djm909 or any urei or ecler mixer becuse they are built realy well o i forgot to mention rane ranes faders will last you a lifetime guarenteed those other mexers are well build but only djm909 has FX but they all have fx send and return so you could get a efx or kaos pad to rig up if you wanted fx

best decks to get ye old 1200/1210 any mk cept 1 lol / stanton st.150 or str8.150s they are best deck arround best torg on the market allot of advantages over 1200/1210 cept they are not 1200/1210 lol but they are so much better

any way thats my take on things hope i was helpfull
