one of my dreams -
10-12-08, 12:59 AM
i want to start by saying that this has always been a dream of mine, its just clearer about how i want to go about this.
i know for a fact that i would like to be a world renowned hardstyle dj, my favorite track being angel by the nasty boyz
i know i want to laptop dj, as it is the most cost effective
i already have a copy of the most recent fruity loops (for making songs and such)
now what i don't know
dj-ing at its heart is just playing songs for a crowd (IMO) but i expect there is much, much more to it. i want to know what a dj is really doing up there besides playing music. i would like to know if anyone could give me tips on fruity loops and mixing/song making in general. i really need help in dj terminoledgy, especially when it comes to equipment. lastly, i want to know everything there is to know about dj-ing as a whole.
i hope you guys can help me achieve me dream goal, plus, i'd love to have that prefix (DJ ArC, lol)

Theres alot more to it than just playing songs. beatmatching is a tough thing to learn and perfect. Then u need to put together a full set that keeps the crowd energized and moving. Alot of DJ's say that laptop dj'ing isnt really dj'ing. I dont know much about the programs, but i heard the programs can do the beatmatching itself. I dont think u can learn much about dj'ing and producing using a laptop program. Sure it might be cheaper, but u can find some good deals on cdj's and turntables on ebay or craigslist. I bought two Stanton STR8-60 direct drive turntables that are in great condition for $200.00 on craigslist, and the dude gave me a free 2 channel Numark mixer. Watch some vids about dj'ing and beatmatching on youtube. Theres alot of very good vids there.
We cant stop here......this is bat country!!
I GOTTA HAVE MORE COWBELL!!!!
Dude, your ass is tanner than my face!

some good points elvis... although imo, it doesnt matter waht format of mixing you use. blending music together is the art, even if its from a laptop. laptops are a great way to go about mixing... you can go out of your lap into cdj and use them as a controller.... not only vinyls... like serroto.
you ahve to learn the basics arc, like beatmatching and song structure. once you know how the songs are structured, and how to keep the beats together, you can work on constructing mixes like elvis said. adn then the art starts to come in,,, you can mix two different songs together a hundred different ways....
you should understand being a hardstyl dj you are likely to get yourself into some serisou djing skills. i jsut mean compared to being a wedding dj...
there is alot more to djing than just playing song after song... unless you are a wedding dj. even though they too, try to keep a certain kind of energy and flow consistant and appropiate to the event!
some tutorials im making are being worked on adn i hope some of them will help you out. they will be coming out soon. jsut consider the fact,
you will have to find passion for the music., to put up with the bull, the struggles, and the times where you jsut dont want to mix,.. you will have to find it in your heart. if its there, you will become a great dj with a little help from people that care, and its so possible!
practice,
and enjoy. dont give up. ill post more back to your thread later, ive got some personal stuff to attend to.
plur.
be motivated, and energized. every time you mix.

good, good, i like this feedback. do you guys know where i can start learning about equipment? and i already know alot of basic structuring (primarily hardstyle), my pet peeve being that most hardstyle songs are centered around the bass with a cheap ass melody you'd think they made in 5 seconds. lol, i had my first djing experience today (so to speak) i had an mp3 and about 9 people wanted to do this for fun, so a bunch of them brought splitters, like a tree of headsets, and i managed to keep them entertained for like, 2 hours, lol

not being a DJ myself i'm not sure how much i can help, but i do have a lot of dj friends (being a bar maid will bring you in contact with some cool people!)
I would suggest seeing who DJ's in your area. speak to them, and tell them that your learning, listen to what they play in what order. how it's mixed and dropped in. see if they can give you any tips. see if they'll let you hang out or show you anything.
Once you have a setup get playing to as many people as you can. get people round to hang while you play. get up on the decks at afterparties if you can. practice all the time. ask for tips and hints on here.
and wait on the edge of your seat for Dathans Tuts!!
hope some of this helps!
