so i just started djing recently. i have to ask is it a poor choice to have learned to beat match using serato? is it going to make it harder for me to learn to beat match by ear? i've mastered the serato and i feel like since i ave a visual aid i can hear it better but i was just wondering if serato is going to help or hinder me. thanks guys

What style are you mixin? if it's breaks...i gotcha! I use Serato for all my sets, and it enables me to mix on the fly, scratch, beat juggle, beat match...blah blah blah....anything u can do with real VinYl.....u can do with time coded Vinyl...I stack my rep on it

you should still get used to doing it just on vinyl without a laptop because if there's a situation where you cant use a laptop or you dont have all the gear, you need to be flexible and be able to mix no matter what the setup is.
dieselboy's first gig was one turntable, a tape player and a radio! being good no matter what the setup will make you an awesome dj.

Oh yeah...thats mos def tru!!! But as far as learning the basics...serato isn't a bad tool. If I had a kick ass program 10 years ago when i got started....then I wouldnt have to waste HOURS UPON HOURS learning to beat match. Serato is very nice visually to use to see where your beats "hit".

beatmatching only takes a couple sessions to learn what to do but it can take months and months to get good at it. then after you get good at it, you have to start working on how fast you can do it without messing up, because as your djing gets better you'll want to throw in tracks as a tease and pull them out and mix something else. eventually you'll get to where you can match at least five different songs during the course of one song playing the whole way through. if im spinning at home i take my time and be lazy about it but if im spinning out at a club, ill drop a new track every 2 minutes or less. it takes a while to get that fast but its awesome.
whats funny is, when i was learning beatmatching (i was 16, im 25 now), there was nothing BUT turntables, and there was no such thing as a visual aid. you could do it or you couldnt. you kids today!
