Default Thoughts on Digital (mp3's)vs Analog(Vinyl) - 03-04-08, 07:50 PM

Can anyone REAAAAALY tell the difference in an analog vs digital track?
I can only detect SMALLLLLLL details of bass loss in digital, only because I produce and remix. What about pure listeners?

Just gimme your thoughs....

I'm not much of a vinyl person but I can tell you alot about digital audio compression and such. I'm going to be honest, mp3 is shit. It is a crappy little lossy compression system that tears your music appart. Most of the audio codecs used in mainstream are "lossy" codecs, these take the original audio stream and break it down into a smaller lower quality track. And then there are "lossless" codecs, these simply use specific algorithms to identify parts of a track that are output at the same frequency. It then records the placement and how often it occurs, then it removes the excess of that track leaving at the end of transcoding and compression one sample of each frequency in that track. When decompressed it places the removed parts back in place using the recorded placement. Lossless codecs, such as FLAC, are an exact copy of an audio stream not cut down, degraded or changed in anyway. The only bump in using lossless codecs is size in data. When compressed the files are small, but when decompressed they are f'ing huge. This isn't so much a problem now days with the price per byte being tremendously low. But if your looking for an exact digital reproduction of a track, your looking for FLAC. I personally will always support FLAC because I'm an audiophile.

Hope that helped.

haha this is one of my big frustrations. We spend so much time and money recording high quality music, 24 bit, then it gets put on a 16 bit CD, or turned into an mp3. And THEN people listen to that through terrible speakers. bleck!
I think for home listening, when your studying, you can hear a difference between vinyl and digital, but i doubt u could in a live setting, so to a dj, im not sure how much it matters. just my 2 cents

there's a big difference. it's hard to tell normally but if you mix an mp3 with a vinyl record, you can hear how different they sound if you cut back and forth. with .wav or .cda files it's not such a difference but when you mix a record with a 320 you can tell.

the main difference is the bass is less "warm" and "forefront" on digital, but the treble/mids are "brighter" or sharper on digital. vinyl is better for bass, digital is better for the higher freq ranges. i try not to spin anything less than 256k when i play out at clubs, because you can tell when it sounds all nasty like that. as far as a whole set of just one or the other, (for purely audio reasons) i dont think it matters which you use.

also, in the long run, vinyl sounds like SSHHIIITTTT after more than ten years, or after being played so many times. it gets awful sounding but it takes a while for that to happen. i back up all my vinyl digitally so i can play vinyl if i want but also i wont lose my vinyl once it wears out.

Hopefully sony will expand the usage of Bluray into audio. Then we can all have 32-bit uncompressed LPCM to listen to at home. lol as if thats ever going to happen.

never say never, as time goes on technology only gets better and better.

could you imagine, in the 80's when most of us had big wooden boxed televisions that people today would have 2-inch-thick movie-quality high definition 50-inch flat screen tv's hanging on their bedroom wall? it may take a while but someone will always find a way to improve on what we have.
