Default Time coded vinyl, future of djing? - 03-03-08, 02:26 AM

Hey guys. Everyone talks about using vinyl, or using mp3's/cd's, Whats the word on using aa program like virtualvinyl and time coded vinyl on classic turntables? it seems like a fusion of past and future. I've seen scratching vids done on time coded vinyl and im impressed. its basicaly all the good points of the real thing, with all the convenience of doing it off a laptop. m planning on buying my first set up, what do u guys think of this idea? i can get a free laptop from a friend, virtual vinyl is 400 (hardware and software) then 2 turntables and a mixer is all i need right? couldnt i do it with 1 turntable though realy? just switching between which virtual deck its controlling?? Hit me back with ur opinions.
Thanks
Hunter

I know quite a few people that used laptops. you can store your music on there and just tranfer it to the CD/Turntable. it comes in handy a lot. But then the space is on issue. One of my friends had a lot of problems finding a place to put is laptop. So he just stoped using the laptop and whent backl to regular CD/Vynyls. But they do sell these really cool Holders that you can put your laptop. its like a little stand so its just right above your mixxer. That makes it easy for you to reach everything, cause its all in one place.
its not a bad Idea I would def. say try it out. A lot of people are using them now. I might do that too sometime in the future.

ive seen several different people using serato or final scratch or whatever and not only is it a pain (instead of just decks, you have 2 tables, a mixer, a laptop, a laptop stand, the little thing it all hooks into and wires out the ASS) but half the time it doesn't seem to even work. every other time i see someone use it, it takes a long time to setup and lots of times they cant even make it work at all so they cant play unless they brought a bag of backup vinyl. to me, its a lot of hassle to do the same thing with a bag of vinyl or a booklet of cd's. the only real advantage i see is that you have your whole library of songs with you, which is probably nice but i only use about 30-50 tracks per hour or two-hour set.

Dude...I use Serato and I LOVE IT!!!!! I've been a DJ for a decade this year (woohoo), and have ALWAYS used VINYL. A buddy of mine brought Serato over to my studio, and I WAS HOOKED!!! I've found NO ISSUES at ALL with Serato, and will continue to use it in the future for all my gigs....

i would suggest finding someone who has it already (or a store that will let you try it) and work with it for a few minutes before you make a decision. it sucks to buy new equipment and then you dont like it, or buy something else when you would have liked the first thing.

I agree with Ablist on this issue. I bought traktor scratch and HAAAAAAAATED it, however I have a buddy who can't stand serato...and loves Traktor Scratch. Mos def make sure you try out the equip b4 u invest $$$.

Once again...searato is the shidizzle in my opinion. and by the way......"regular" tables can be used with either...

It mos def works...but like Ablist mentioned...you really do wanna try out the software/hardware b4 purchasing them. Serato is wonderful, but you may wanna try virtualvinyl and Traktor Scratch...those are comparable. The "Cadalac" (sp?) of time coded vinyl is Serato in muh humble opinion...

plus serato is like $500. super lame. i would say learn on real vynil. serato is too expensive and its making my life so hard im like addicted to it and i havent learned to beat match by ear yet because of it.

like i wish i learned on real vynil and then moved to serato. that seems like the better option

due to lack of voice, the attorney speaks for me: "im a record player, a rec rec rec rec record player."
