When I got into the scene around 95 raves were going off huge every weekend all around the mid-west. Getting gigs was EASY. I was in a different state every weekend, meeting new people, and there was no shortage of time slots to fill. Now the rave scene is non-existant and there really is NO club scene here in Indianapolis. Its tough.....
Back then you would build your reputation as a DJ and then fall into the production side because of the people you were assosiating with and that was "the next step". It is the exact opposite now. You cannot get your foot in the door as a DJ only. You must be putting out tracks for the recognition. Every one and their mother is a fckin DJ these days. Kids never have to touch vinyl, a turntable, or even a mixer for that matter to call themselves a DJ with all of the digital DJ programs available.
I could rant on and on but will try to sum it up. You must be involved in every aspect of the electronic music scene. DJ, audio engineer, promoter, marketing, business minded, computer wiz, PR dude, graphic design...and on and on.......
Whatever you do DONT GIVE UP!!! I do what I do for the love of what I do, not for what I do may give me in return.
