Question Vinyl or Digital? - 11-20-07, 07:16 PM

Vinyl Records or Digital CDs? What are the overall benefits and downsides to each? Which do you prefer and why?

My understanding is that Vinyl is more true to 'art' of being a DJ, while digital cds are more convenient. What is your take on this wild conundrum? And if someone was just getting started without any equipment, would you prefer digital or vinyl?

I personally would rather use cdj's...but as far as starting up, I would recommend learning on vinyl tables so you don't take for granted the convenient features of cdj's

Turntables
Pros:
Cheaper,
Get the real feel of the vinyl,
Some remixes only come out on vinyl,
You learn certain techniques that can only be preformed on a turntable

Cons:
Bigger than CDjs,
Vinyl can be hard to find/expensive,
Not as easy to use as CDjs/less features,
Broken needles can be expensive

CDjs:
Pros:
Use cds (allows music to go from computer to CDj almost instantly),
Cd's are cheaper than vinyl,
More portable than turntables,
Many features that make mixing easier ("hot cues"),
Looks nicer *my opinion only*

Cons:
Much more expensive,
Can't "scratch the vinyl",
Can't do some turntable moves

When it comes down to it though, I think CDj's are better, even though they're more expensive, they're worth it. Besides, nowadays, if u actually start Dj'ing clubs, most of em have CDj's, so starting out with CDj's is pretty much the future, if u can afford them.

i agree to most of this.... other than you having to buy a cdj thats over 500$. if you are starting out, and not sure if its for you, i wouldnt spend a grand on a cdj.... i bought a numark axis 9 its around 300$ and you can scratch with a cdj if it has the option,. the axis 9 does. although

it isnt like a vinyl.... there are major differences with the portability of the dj, and the ease of performance.

cdjs are future coming, but at the same time i think vinyls are the heart of a dj.

some tacks i have cannot be found on vinyl. casue they were never made....

ease of music collection is a big issue as well. vinyls are more expensive. but i have hundreds more vinyl than cds.... why?

because i cant afford everything all at once. just pick something and stick with it for a while. i bought records and turntables.... and am now just startign to burn cds... and after i get a collection of them ill buy good professional cdj,s .
