Default homemade finger lights - 09-25-08, 05:01 AM

hey all. so i went to a party the other day and was very intrigued by this guy's setup.

so this guy had lights that he could cycle through all the colors that he wanted... and the best part was that they were all like the rav'n lights, but different colors as well. oh, and he could make the colors of rav'n lights out of these gloves.

the best part is, is that this guy made his own lights. he had a circuit board and everything on his wrist and the colors were AMAZING.

just wondering if anyone here has any knowledge on how to do that, cause i would love to experiment and make my own set

Go search on google and instructables.com for DIY LED lighting. There's so much information out there it's crazy. But yeah, I would say just get a microcontroller with enough outputs for the LED's. I'd say you would probably need 15 outputs to control common anode RGB LED's (one output for each color terminal). microcontrollers are not that hard to program, and people probably already have scipt/programs that you can flash the microcontroller with. Then just get 5 RGB led's per hand (one for each finger) and wire it up. Make sure you look at how much voltage the LED's are going to require and get a power supply (most likely batteries) that matches the input of your microcontroller etc. You will also need resistors of different ohm and wattage ratings. You can usually find a LED resistor calculator and just plug in the numbers for your specific project. I know it sounds like alot, but it's really not. Plus with microcontrollers you can create any combination of RGB levels to create a rediculous amount of different colors and shades.

I was thinking of starting up some LED projects pretty soon. Like turning old glowsticks into LED sticks, but not using the "stick a small keychain LED light in it" way, but actually gutting it, cutting the opening to fit some ag13 batteries, and some RGB LED's. Maybe include a pushbutton switch for it. The only issue I'm having right now with my prototypes are ways to keep the batteries from flying out when you spin em. I was thinking maybe a cap that could go over the bottom to cover the hole/batteries in the base of the glowstick and it could have a couple small screws to hold it on or something. Anybody have any ideas? I would be willing to start a DIY LED glove project kit and you could like, select colors and flash modes for each finger, then I would send you the kit, or build it for you ya know? I'll keep you folks updated on my progress.

I just ordered 100 LED's to get started messing around with em, so I'll let you guys know what else I come up with. My buddy knows how to program microcontrollers so we can customize the colors and mode of the RGB LED's using just one button. It's just a matter of packing all that awesomeness into a tiny little glowstick package :P It's gonna be sweet, plus we'll be able to recycle glowsticks. If you guys decide you want to donate old used glowsticks, just PM me and I'll tell you where you can mail them or whatever.
