Default Left hand freehand - 09-05-08, 05:36 AM

I have recently been practicing freehand a little more to add into my glowstringing. With glowstringing my left hand has always had problems, it is harder to string smoothly with my non dominant left hand. That is stringing though and I never thought of that happening in freehanding but it does. My left hand is retarded, and you would think well stringing would be harder but with just moving your left hand around by itself it should be able to do what you want, but it doesn't which makes it really frustrating. So...

Does or did anyone have this problem with your left hand and freehanding? Is there anything I can do to improve my left hands coordination and make my freehanding more smooth?

same as always. practice. practice. practice.

do some left handed practice. do figure 8's one way, then reverse it. write with your left hand. anything really. its takes practice but eventually you'll strengthen your left hand coordination.

my left hand is slightly weaker than my right, but not too noticeable now.

Default The best way for your hands to have co dominance - 09-07-08, 07:41 PM

I must agree with speedy
The best way for your hands to have co dominance is to perform a technique, then try to do it in reverse.
The best technique i feel is the best for increasing left handed strength is the helicopter: both clockwise and counter clockwise. Take it slow, but be strict with yourself about the rotation plane and that the sticks are always at 180.
I understand that can be difficult with strings binding your hands, but such is the curse of glowstringers.

How long did it take till your left hand was comfortable with freehand?

no exact time period. i first practiced doing 8 forwards, then backwards. i was pretty decent after 1 day. it's just a form of muscle memory.

Ya, I got my left hand working by taping my right hand to my leg and doing everything for an entire night of practice w my left hand only. Then you kinda learn what you can do and can't so well with your left, and can even figure out new moves. Try to restrict your right hand/arm as much as you can for a day or 2, it helped me a lot.

another great idea. idk about the taping part, but forcing yourself to use just one arm is a great technique. another i used to do is a quick 3 or 4 move pattern, anything free hand that came to me. then practicing till i could do it the opposite way with the left hand leading instead of the right.

It is kind of like trying to perfect writing with your left hand. Thanks for the tips though I will work on it.

You really don't have to tape it, I just remember learning w my left I couldn't keep my right arm from butting-in. It let me freely practice with full focus on only my left arm and what I can do, what I should work on.

B-EZ knows what hes talking about. he's really good with liquid n what not guys.

as far as what you can do.. get 2 pitchers full of water and 2 long spoons. put the pitchers next to each other, and stir them. sounds crazy, but this builds non dominant coordination to your right hand. ive done it and i have seem improvemets. pretty much these teaches your non dom hand to be more smooth n what not.

like i said it sounds crazy, but it does work. you can do anything with this same basic concept. you ca hold a SOCK between both of your hands which is good for tracing. it learns your non dom to follow your dom hand in a more fluid fashion. toy around with shit, you'll find a good way of teaching your hand to move how you want it too.
