Crisis of faith -

I got into glowsticking about a year ago. it was, like, all I could think about for about half a year. then I started getting into more diverse glow-stuff (gloves, staffs, etc.) and by the time I left school my focus had almost entirely shifted onto dance, like poppin and cwalking and all that.
but here's the problem. over the summer I tried to teach a brief class on modern dance and found out the hardway that I really don't know jack about dancing. that and last weekend I got viciously served at school, like, 6 times by this one kid and realized that no one at my school has any real appreciation for the technique.
so here's my delemma. on one hand I have the raving stuff that I kinda forgot. on the other I have all the dancing stuff I never really knew and see little point in learning now cause basically if I ever want it to be worth anything to me I'll need to be able to beat this kid and I just don't see the point when it'd be easier to just remove myself from that topic. How can I move on or make glowsticking fun again?

i dont really know how to help you man. for me, it just is fun. idk, try new things and go back and do the things that were fun for you at one point then try to build off that. like i said, for me the fun comes just from doing it, not being the best at it or trying to be better than someone else. in my opinion trying to be better than people would kill it for me too. just have fun and do whatever the fuck you want to do and dont give a damn what anyone else thinks.

I've never lost my interest in poi/glowstringing. I don't know what you could do to try and get that fun level back into it for you personally.

Honestly....who cares who is a better dancer. In the scheme of things, it doesn't matter....AT ALL. Sorry, don't mean to be callous, but bluntly honest. I mean, don't give up trying to be good at dancing....but compare your skill level to your skill level a week ago....not someone elses.
As for glowsticking....maybe get a new toy (sock poi, zunis, etc) and rock out. Put on your favorite music, feel the flow and try learning some new stuff....once you figure out a new move or two, the interest/reward will come back. Did you string or freehand? If just one, maybe try the other? Just a few ideas.
Feel the beat from start to stop, dancin' and groovin' from bottom to top!

well, here's the thing about the dancing. This kid has been, like, the shit ever since 8th grade. he's a sophmore, but all of my fellow seniors have basically raised him to our status. and at this camp, we found out he could dance.
what happened was a bunch of us were in this hotel room just chillin to music, right? I start, like, c-walking to stuff. so someone suggests I do a battle with this third kid. well, at the time I thought I was decent, but quickly realized I kinda needed more practice. now, this kid couldn't dance really, but he was well liked so we had a grand ole time. then this other kid, the good dancer, comes up and challenges me. I figure "okay sure. he can't be that good and it's all in good fun". not only was he a pretty good popper, but he basically spent the whole song blocking me and dissing me.
now that the dust has settled, no one really cares. but I keep thinking that if I go back to dancing now he's gonna come out of nowhere, demand a rematch, school me again, and I'll be the kid whole got served in front of the whole school.

ok...in my experience, high school is like Vegas (or at least the Vegas slogan.) what happens there, stays there. Enjoy yourself, do what you like, and fuck this battling stuff. Dance for the fun of it. Dance in your room all by yourself, dance in the kitchen, or in your yard, or in the dark in the middle of the night while howling at the moon. It doesn't matter. In a year, you will be somewhere else, doing something wonderful, and high school will no longer matter. Just be happy.

well put. i put dancing on the same level as any other art form and for me that means nooooo competition. so fuck that other kid, if that's what makes him feel good about himself then whatever, but if he can't have a good time without a bunch of people around to watch, then that's his loss.

Totally agreed! HS is the kinda thing that no one looks back on except the immature people who never move psychologically past the development contained herein. Once you get in college.....it's a new start, honestly. NO ONE cares whether you were popular, an all-star athlete, an alcoholic/druggy, talented dancer/singer/whateva'.....you get a new chance to show what you're all about. Do so WISELY....just my advice (has nothing to do with the topic....just make good impressions).

TRUTH! You should dance to have a good time and express yourself....NOT to look better than someone else or impress a group of peers. IMO FUCK BATTLES....I don't care if it's a part of hip-hop/break dancing.....fuck competition in general. Just be yourself (whoever that is) and rock out, have a good time and don't worry about what people think of you. In my experience, people respect/are attracted to those who act like individuals. Something about independence/individuality/personality is damn sexy!
