welcome to genx! have u introduced ur self on the introduce urself thread?
o well, but first move i learned was a butterfly, and a 3 beat weave, just go to tutorials and see wat looks easy
i have found its alot of trial and error
i do have xbox live but no camera, my XBL GT is i 1800owned u
the ones from Dollar store are great for practice, wen u first start color doesnt matter, just crack a pair and wen they die still use them, good for practice...
string length, u should wrap around ur fingers and hold between ur index and thumb, u should be able to wrap it around ur hand 2 times then grab with ur hand...
if u have any questions feel free to ask XD

um i have tried a few tricks like butterflies and weaves.
my problem with the butterflies is they keep hitting each other not often every once a while. and for weaving im afraid if i do some 3 beat weaves i will hit myself in the face lol

as goes for xbox live its all good u dont have a camera but they are fun to have the cool thing about it is that i can atleast show you how far i got even if u dont have one

Wow he did a pretty good job. *RESPECT*

As for the initial question, you should learn the following... planes, 2 beat weave, 3 beat, and 5 beat, butterflys, and at least some basic wraps. get those down and you'll be ready to learn anything else. Good string control and being comfortable with them is the best place, get used to the feel before learning harder tricks.

1.Does anyone here live in new jersey?
No Idea, feel free to ask around, as previously stated ask in your introduction thread. I'm sure you'll find some people. Also check to see if there is a GXG group for your area. You may meet other people close by in other states.

2.Where to buy glowsticks?
You best bet for the cheapest will be online. Make a bulk purchase usually 50+ at a time. Normal cheap sticks will go around 50 cents a pair. Hi-Intensity run anywhere from 60 cents to $2 a pop. Again depending on how much you order. A number of our sponsors sell them, and a bunch have a gxg discount. so ask if they have one. Don't forget you can reuse dead ones for practice during the day. This will greatly lower your costs.

3.How long are should the strings be on a glowstick and what kind o strings do i use
Everyone has their own preference, the general rule of thumb though is when you have the string with your grip, the string should be able to wrap around at least 2 times. with the end of the stick just barely landing in your hand. Add another wrap if you like longer strings. Alex has made a tutorial showing this. See the tutorial section.

4.Anyone have xbox live with a vision camera so you could show me how to string or if im doing something wrong?
Again no idea, feel free to start a thread in a section that gets more traffic. I know some people were talking about using the PS3 cameras, so I'm sure someone has the Xbox version.

i had the same problems, once u practice the butterfly ull get it down...
for the weave, go with nike's slogan, Just Do It XD
wen i first started i got so many face and nut shots, but its SO worth it...
i was partially blinded at one time from a hit....but that was my fault...
and ya, that would be great, send me a request on XBL and go for it....
im on for a litttle bit every day....
if ya need anything, like i said, feel free to ask XD everyone here is amazing!

Hey:-) I missed you intro thread, so I'll say hi here. I'm sarah. Welcome to the site!

As far as learning to string goes - I'm a firm advocate of sock poi when you're first learning any move. Basic sock poi are just tube socks with either about a cup of rice or a tennis ball in the toe of the sock (if you use rice, tie up the sock so that the rice doesn't come flying out or put it in a baggie or soemthing.)

I like sock poi for a couple of reasons - they let you slow your motions down pretty significantly from the amount of speed required to keep sticks going because they weigh more - this gives you mroe time to react and focus on hand motions. And - especially if you use rice - they hurt WAY less than sticks do when you pop yourself in the face. Cause, well...you're gonna. it's part of the sport:-)

It looks liek the guys have gotten you hooked up with the tuts section...if there's anything that you have a specific question about, post it up in that thread.

And now to your original set of questions.

1.Does anyone here live in new jersey?
Yes. Dancefloor (one of our lovely mods) lives in Edison, I think.
Jareblue (another one of our lovely mods) just moved to NYC, and AquaThane (who is currently sort of MIA but is also a mod) is in eastern PA. Hit Dance up first, he's probably closest and probably has the msot free time right now.

2.Where to buy glowsticks?
Places like Target and (grimace) Wal-Mart will usually have a variety of colors in with the sporting goods stuff - check the camping section.
They're pricey, but if you just want a couple it's a good way to go.

3.How long are should the strings be on a glowstick and what kind o strings do i use
String length is a preference thing - shorter strings will give you more speed. You can change it up by starting with longer strings and then wrapping them in mid spin to a shorter length. My strings are about 26-28" from the back of my hand to the end of the stick (the laces are doubled - I use 56" laces) but I also prefer LONG strings.

4.Anyone have xbox live with a vision camera so you could show me how to string or if im doing something wrong?
I do not have a camera of any type. You might check around your area (Where in NJ are you?) and see if there are any poi spinning meetup groups. Poi and stringing use a lot of the same moves and techniques.

Nice! gettin into Stringing.

Well far As buying sticks go i agree above Target Walmart Dollar Store simple to find normaly. Look for the Camping Section

****Biggy that some people dont know when they first start out. If you get new Sticks to practice put them in the Freezer. Then when your ready to use some glowing sticks again microwave them for about 10 Seconds depending on your microwave heat i do 15. (Easy Way to save yourself from wasting time and money on cracking new sticks)***

Now with String lengths some ppl change midway others it just changes with preference over time. Almost every person ive known started with hella long strings sometimes its easier to tangle them but you can swing them much slower to learn. If you want to learn quick wrap combos and speed your routines up Short is the way to go. But as said previously some ppl just switch their string length up mid performance. All Preference but i recommend Long strings for learning new moves and Short for learning new Wraps . Good Luck!
