"combos" was probably a poor choice of words. I agree with you. I think the most I've ever done, and that has only been with fire, is plan on including some short leash work or fountains or something I generally would not include and I need a mental que to do them. Otherwise, I go completely by feel. This is always the case with lights since there is no telling what music is in the background and what my environment is going to look like.
Learning stuff for me is more fun in the general scheme of things, as opposed to a void or vacuum of doing steps 1-5 of a particular move and then repeating ad nauseum until you get it. (Obviously you HAVE to do that initially, but I try to get away from that pretty damn quick).
Since time is limited, I'd rather try to put things together that might flow, including new stuff and just work them. It reinforces the old stuff, smooths out the newer material and helps you find new pathways on the new material. Specially the last bit...picking up new stuff always opens the door to something else...
