hey there techn0000!! you should post a thread on the introduce yourself thing to get yourself out there.
weeeell those first 2 questions are totally preference. I like flatter strings, like the kind that come with chucks, and i double them up, because for me that just feels good i dont know. and i dont get special sticks just any i can find at grocery stores and shit.
as far as moves go, everyone is different. most people learn weaves first, so go for it if you want, but i started with like arm wraps and weird shit before i even got into weaves. one thing i would recommend is to not even practice tricks for a while, itll be discouraging, because your arms will just feel retarded. practice just like spinning the strings at your sides, then split time, then in front of you, that sort of stuff.
but i'd say try to get weaves and butterflies down first. good luck compadre

1. I use any sort of glow stick- the ones from the dollar store, walmart or the interweb.
2. I use shoe laces, length is a preference thing, and so is round/flat but I use a custom length flat lace. (I cut mine to a length I like)
3. Well, I'll tell you what I did and see if it helps:
3bt Weave
Butterfly
Reverse 3bt Weave
Windmill
Fountain (3bt, reverse 3bt and windmill put together)
Wraps - Arm/Bicep (Crappy stuff at first, but it takes time to develop)
That was my first 2 months if I recall. However, there are way more tutorials available now then there where when I started. I encourage you to look at most of them and see which ones you think you can learn pretty quickly. Other than what I mentioned, crossers are fairly easy to learn (imo anyway), thread the needle (TTN), and you should take a look at my wrap tutorial if you're interested in learning wraps.
I covered all the basic ways to do wraps, and showed a few ways to combine them... don't be discouraged when starting wraps though, it takes at least a month to get some decent combos down. Putting wrap combos together is a lot of fun, but it requires you to be comfortable with different types of wraps.
Oh, I almost forgot... once you learn a few things you should work on transitioning. It'll help you put together performances and it may even lead to you figuring out new tricks/ideas (I know it's helped me just fooling around going from thing to thing).
Well, if you have any more questions, just say the word and I'll do my best to help. =)

Hey There. Well as far as Strings go ive been rockin some 27-30 Round laces. They make orbitals cake and are smooth with any type of fast kind of wraps.
I Learned the basics when i was 9 but i did.
1. 3-beat Weave
2. Windmill
3. Chasing the sun
4. Basic arm and leg wraps
5. Butterfly.
6. OTH Butterfly
Every1 progresses diffrently i on one hand took a very long time to catch onto the butterfly cause i loved weaves :P. GOOD LUCK!

Well, I think people have already stated a good small list of beginner moves, but here's my 2 cents...There are two kinds of glowsticks mainly, or at least in the way that matters to pick out which are good for stringing...There are the kind that come with the hook at top, those are ideal for stringing, best for it.. Then there is the same kind (from walmart for example), but have a diff top, where it's split in the middle, and you usually want to take the top off, but the second brand has so little plastic between the hole and the top, that you can string with them, but they will randomly fly off, which is dangerous...They come in a brown package, so pretty much only use sticks that have a hook...As for the strings, the two main kind are flat and round... It's all about preference...My suggestion is go to walmart and buy 2 of every kind you can find of all diff lengths and just experiment...There are many ways to tie, but the two main ways to tie are sticking it through the hole in the top of the glowstick and tying the ends together, a 'loop' tie...Or you can tie a slipknot on one end for your wrist/hand, and tie the other end...From my experience, I like flat strings loop tied.

I learned the corkscrew first, then I think it is a 2 beat weave..... I just recently learned wraps above my head, and I am going to practice this weekend on wraps done in front of me. I have been using Poi ball though.... I think they have a great weight to them.
EDIT----- it isn't the corkscrew I don't think.... derek has seen me do it so he would know for sure.... the balls are over my head and in front of me, but still doing basically what the corkscrew is doing.
my space is myspace.com/r6stunner
Can't get the STOOPID link to work
I can go all weekend with no sleep and still want more when everyone else is going home. If you can keep up, Apply within.

Yeah, thats pretty true. There are also a bunch of different ways to hold your strings. I hold mine like Alex does in his video "How I tie my strings" but I tie them differently. I make a knot at one end (which ends up being the top of the string where I do my grip) and slide the other end through the whole and around the glowstick making a slip. It allows quick stick changes and a comfortable grip. I also found that if the knot isn't near the glow stick it tangles a lot less when doing orbitals.

far As strings would go it depends atm. id get a couple of lengths to try. Obvisley you probly wont be trying one hand stringin yet but as you progress ways of holding strings and lengths will defintly change threw preference

Yeah, def introduce yourself here. Other than that, here's my opinions on the matter. I use 45" flat laces, tied in a circle with the glowstick on it, then wrapped around my hand once so I hold them with my thumb and index finger. As far as what sticks to get....6" sticks with hooks....either from target (camping section) or from wal-mart (camping or actually the kids section ones are the cheapest and have the most colors!). Here's a move list:
2 beat weaves forward(regular then split timing)
3 beat weaves forward
Butterfly forward
basic wraps
Windmill
Butterfly OTH (over the head)
Corkscrew
Reverse weaves (2 and 3 beat)
Reverse butterfly
Be sure to check out these tutorials first.... Spinning 101 and Weaves 101. That should get you pointed in the right direction. Here are the other tutorials.
Feel the beat from start to stop, dancin' and groovin' from bottom to top!
