Default single vs doubled strings - 09-15-08, 10:58 PM

Kay, I realize I don't post here too often (at all) but I had a quick question I'm pretty sure that only you guys could answer!
I really like the looped string around my fingers hold rather than just a knot at the end holding the stick on. But, when I'm doing orbitals, they just never seem to go too smooth when I have them doubled like that... is there any technique that you guys know of that would help my orbitals run smoother? (Yes, I've already looked at all of the orbital tutorials, which were great btw) I use flat 45" laces, but I've heard that round un-stretchy types can make it easier... any ideas?

I cant say much on orbitals, but yes, the non-stretchy stings are better for them. at least for me they are. I figured that out this past weekend actually. I can do orbitals (somewhat) with my strings that dont stretch, that I usually put glowsticks on. they are actually smaller flat laces. my flowtoys strings are stretchy enough that orbitals dont really work too well. they're on round laces that stretch just enough. my theory on it is since you gotta pull on the stings to form the orbital, if the strings can stretch, it wont work because the length of the strings actually spinning can change and throw it out of balance. Thats my theory tho. I'd get a pair of each (stretchy and non stretchy) and just spin and test them out. It could just be the strings. or it could just be the orbital. im not good enough at them to really give a good answer to your question tho, sorry. My strings are doubled up too and thats just what I've found. good luck!

i think i'll try defying gravity, kiss me goodbye im defying gravity and you cant hold me down!

That is really funny because I had the same problem. I prefer to use a 45 inch flat string that is looped around my fingers. I personally think flat are better than round. It is hard to do orbitals at first, but after a while your strings become smoother from the constant rubbing and it becomes much easier. It isn't any different than doing an orbital with a non looped string, just keep at it an you will get it. I actually think it is easier and you can do an orbital more smoothly with the strings looped.

hmmm.. i find that orbitals are much easier with flat laces... but then again.. I find everything easier with flat laces.. so maybe it's just my preference

ima have to go with Flat laces. ive had a few different types and i like my flat ones better.

As for the orbital i really just learned that this last week and what has helped me is that the string on the outside pull it away from ur body like another inch and that has made it smoother for me!

need anymore help just ask and we can help!

Hah, you guys are awesome! I was not expecting this many replies. But I have to agree with osmosis, cause it is actually getting easier, and I've noticed that my strings do look a little more worn down now. So I think I've just gotta break these in, I mean... they were only a week old or so! But thanks for all your replies, I can always count on you guys
Btw, I'll be putting up a vid within the next couple weeks... I think I've been stringing since late July/early August, so I'll have to ask for criticism then! Thanks all!

YAY VID!!

I have been having a similar issue with getting caught doing orbitals, and I think it's cause I didn't have a knife when I cracked my last set of sticks and so I bit the hooks off. Anyone else have that? How do I fix it?

I know the problems solved, but I couldn't help but say that while stretchy strings are annoying for orbitals, I've found that the jailhouse poi(which are insanely stretchy) orbit really really well.

After I cut off the hook from my glowsticks I rub the end against the carpet to smooth out the snags. I have mentioned this a few times so you might have already read it, but it does help.
