Fair warning: There is a long story involved, but I had a really cool night and I want to share how I figured this thing out.
So, I've been noticing a few people who are in a kind of a rut...including myself. And some of you may know that I am mostly a hardcore poi kid:-) Welll....today, I was jamming out to a Flyin Brian mix I hadn't listened to a whole lot, and I got the urge to spin. And I was at a strip mall...so I went to the sporting goods store, bought some cheap sticks and a new set of laces, and started jamming out on the paltform waiting for the train (and hitting myself a lot). Adn I was having a good old time, but I ahd to stop when I got on the train. So I get off to change trains to get the rest of the way home, and I start jamming out again, and this kid (couldn't have been more that 12) comes over to me and says, hey, can you do that thing my buddy does? And I say what thing? And I hand the kid my sticks, and he just starts BUSTING OUT some serious freehand. Awesome.
And then one of the transit guys comes over and we start talking about music. So I played him some of the mix. And he looked at me and went "THAT is some seriously SICK SHIT. Where can I find music like that?" So I hand him a flyer:-) He asked for a couple mroe for his buddies and said "so, is everyone form this site cool and chill like you?" And I told him, yeah! They're all awesome!
It gets better. This is the thing I discovered. So I get off the train, and I have about a mile walk back to me house...and I really really wanna keep spinning. And I remembered something Jared said last winter about stinging and walking. So I did. And lemme tell you...busting out flowers walking down a residential street at 10pm on a weeknight and having people open their doors to see what the hell is going on while ducking trees and cars and dogs...Awesome.
Try it. Try keeping a buzzsaw or a corkscrew going at the pace of serious hardcore while walking. Totally changes up the routine.
I had a good time, and I wanted to share...cause I feel like I'm out of my rut, and hopefully it'll help some of the otehr folks who are bored to tears right now.

LOL that is sooooo kewl man. Glad to hear you had an awsome night and glad to hear you got out of your rut. At the moment i'm in my own rut, don't laugh please. LOL (only I can) I can't get the five beat weave. I can get the three no problem, but the five is like a totally different world. I've hit myself so many times in the back of the head, I swear I have brain damage. hahahha, freakin hurts. I've been practicing for two days straight, Literally. In the morning before work, and at my lunch break and after work when I get home all I do is stringing. I know it takes time, but i'm just impatient. I'd try your drill, but I can't even do those things you said. LOL I'm still new to stringing.

I might say lay off the 5 beat for a while...it'll come. try some flowers (they be pretty:-), try some butterflies, try some corkscrews and buzzsaws...they're really fun. and then throw the 5 beat back into the mix. I've been spinning pretty seriously for about 8 months, and I'm just now getting it to be comfortable.
And really...you can do this with anything you know how to do...try taking a wlak with your three beat weave:-) Rock that out for your neighbors!

ah stringing and walking. 3/4 of my life. but definitely not a good way to get somewhere. if you have more than 2 people who all spin poi, and are all walking down the street, it'll take you 2 hours to get down the block haha.

That is an amazing story. Did Jared/Thane/Myself mention the story about walking around downtown philly in the middle of CLOCK WORK GLOW!? It was awesome, and we were seeing who could do which btb move while walking, and we were all doing different fountains, wraps etc.
It was awesome, we even ended up stringing under some construction right by city hall. It was funny as hell because it was right at a 3 way traffic intersection and people kept staring at us while they were stopped. God, I love being "weird" in the eyes of people who have no idea what I'm doing.
Once I get my new poi, I think I'm going to the mall or something and spinning for a while. I have an urge to do it =D

Yay!!! I'm glad you're out of your rut! I loved your story....it made me happy and even gave me chills at moments! I love warm fuzzy moments. I also love to spin while walking. It's actually a really really good way to work on your planes. This is because it is way easier to spin in the direction you are walking, but if you try spinning perpendicular, it just doesn't work right. When you're walking, the forward momentum helps keep the poi going the right direction. I actually used this method when I learned BTB weaves....kinda walk forward a little....it helps keep those planes correct which makes the move easier (or at least it did for me!). I get pretty into it when I walk/spin.....I'm all spinning around and flailing my arms. LOL. People probably think I'm crazy, but it's all good! This is also a good concept to utilize for performances. Some of my best performances were when I had a HUGE area to use....and I used ALL of it....spinning around everywhere, running side to side, etc. It totally adds a good energy to your spinning.
Feel the beat from start to stop, dancin' and groovin' from bottom to top!
