Sock poi Verse Glowstrings -
07-08-08, 04:13 PM
Aight well ive been tryin to consider including more poi in my routines since i got wraps down pretty well. Aint much of a fan of lota poi but tryin to give it a shot. My only prob though is that i practice with Sock poi its how i learned most my poi moves. For Example i can pick up a pair of sock poi and do a Full body Butterfly Crosser Btb Weave and few other things pretty easily but then i pick up meh strings and its a pain in the ass and it looks ugly. Anyone got a suggestion or two on how to fix this prob?

Well, first off, it seems like you consider poi and glowsticking 2 separate entities.....when in fact, they are the same thing! Pretty much every move can be done with either, although some are easier on one or the other.
Now, to answer your question....once you have a move down on poi, you should be able to transition it to glowsticks fairly easily....the hard part of learning the hand motions is already done. The weight (or lack of) is the only issue. I just pretend that the glowsticks are really heavy and try to feel the weight of them pulling back on my hand. It will take some time to get the feel of it, but the motions are all the same. There's no real trick to it, just getting an affinity for spinning with the light sticks again.
Keep working with poi....it's a great tool to practice with and I think it makes learning certain moves much easier. When I started doing poi, it took my glowsticking to the next level! I'm sure it could do the same for others.
Feel the beat from start to stop, dancin' and groovin' from bottom to top!

Once I get a set of poi that glow I'm probably not going to string half as much as I do now. I mean, I really enjoy wraps so I can't drop it entirely, but poi feels better to me. I haven't done much stringing in front of audiences, but what I have noticed is that they like wraps. At least the people that don't have any concept of what kind of motor skills are involved with spinning. They like spirals too.
I'll be hammering some meltdowns or something that I think is mega fun and cool then they're all like, "Do that thing where it goes off your arm and leg or something, that was cool."...../sigh. Oh, there's also, "I liked that spiral thing or whatever on your hands." Yeah, that's simple too. It's like, why do I even bother. But thats also a good thing for new stringers to remember, it's the simple things. Just gotta do it right.
But yeah, I'm gonna have to go with poi on this one. Spinning poi is my Zen.

if you're having problems with weight in your transitions from poi to glowstrings add tape to your sticks it helps me quite a bit with getting new moves down

Choose one or the other...
Poi or Glowstringing...
Going by generalities, the weight is usually so different amongst the two, that'll you'll be use to one, and feel 'thrown off' somewhat on the other...
If you want to glowstring, then glowstring, if you want to eventually reach a level for fire poi, then do sock poi, because sock poi is MUCH closer related to fire poi than glowstringing.

Not totally true (well, for me anyway). I started with glowsticks....did that about 2 years and then started doing poi. I definitely like poi a LOT more than glowsticks, but I have no problem picking up some sticks and rocking shit at a party.....I can do pretty much the same moves I do with poi....plus some wraps. I like having the versatility of knowing how to do both. There's definitely a difference in weight, but that's not too hard to overcome.
