Stupid Question, Spinning -
08-27-08, 03:20 PM
hey guys. hows it goin? so i just started glowstringing and i decided im just gonna learn to spin first haha. i have some really stupid questions that are probably obvious, but everyone here seems really nice so im not afraid to ask them lol. i only have youtube videos to work off of really, and you cant really see the person stringing, so i was wondering when i first started off. do you string next to you, or in front of you? and im working on spinning on all directions (above me, infront of me, to the side), so how do you string above your head? ive started off just spinning with one glowstick, one hand, and once in a while i work with two for the fun of it. also, is there such thing as a "reverse spin" arm wrap? when you come out of an arm wrap spinning counter-clockwise, you end up continuing to the spin clockwise, so what do you do if you want to do another arm wrap? ahha i have no idea what im talking about. are arm and hand wraps seperate? or do they only exist with each other (a.k.a hand-arm wrap)? help me!! lol so far, even though i havent learned anything...i LOVE it! its soo stress relieving! lol. even just spinning i find really fun haha. anyway, thx guys~

First off, welcome to the site:-) Have you made an Introduce Yourself thread, just to say hi to everyone? Second...spinning and stringing get used pretty interchangably around here...so you are starting to learn to glowstring, yes? OK. Head on over to the Glowsticking Tutorials section, and you will find some things that I hope will help. There is Spinning 101, Weaves 101, How I Tie My Strings, and my favorite....Butterflies (there's all kinds of different butterfly things, so I'm not gonna link that one.)
I'm glad you feel comfortable enough to ask questions:-) We're all happy to help...check out these videos...I think they will help you get going. It's hard to elarn to string from performance videos...I think you're going to feel better about it if you learn one thing at a time.
And it IS stress relieving:-) It's an amazing hobby:-) Enjoy!

NOT true....now that you're a part of this awesome community, you have our tutorial page and all of us GXG peeps to help you....YAY!!! Like Ukeyouee said, start off with spinning 101 and weaves 101. That will get you going in the right direction. Your questions are definitely NOT dumb. Starting with one hand is a good idea to get the feel for it, cause two can be a little complicated for the beginner. Most motions of back/forth are figure 8's (your hand traces an invisible '8')....which can be done side to side, front to back or top to bottom. Going over your head is this same 8 motion. When you do two, one leads the other always follows, keeping one hand on top. This motion will get you doing the windmill (front/back over your head), 2 beat weave (side to side) and corkscrew (top/bottom).
As far as the wraps go....you can wrap any part of your body...arms, hands, biceps, legs, neck, etc. This can be done in either direction from either hand. When you get better, you can even do two hands at the same time (either on the same body part or on different....and with sticks going the same or opposite direction....so you've got options!). As far as hand/arm wraps....most people just do fore-arm or wrist, but you can use your hand (spiral wraps are on your hands, actually). Despite the variation in the actual anatomical part you are wrapping on, most people just refer to these as 'arm wraps.'
Hope that helps...good luck! We're all there to help you....the only 'dumb' questions are the ones you don't ask!
And Ukeyouee....good post, complete with hyperlinks....*Respect given*
Feel the beat from start to stop, dancin' and groovin' from bottom to top!

welcome to gxg!!! we <3 all spinners, no matter how much/little experience they have! also- if you need a mini tutorial or just want to see what a move looks like, you can ask! and you'll get lots and lots of help!!!
what kind of strings do you have? since you are new, i'd get some really fat strings, like skate shoes strings. your fingers will probably get sore pretty quick and i've found that the bigger the string, the easier it is on the fingers until you start getting callouses.
and my advice- keep a steady beat going with your foot or head and count in your head. its extremely easy to start a move and then speed up without realizing it. keeping the time helps keep you smooth and steady!
i think i'll try defying gravity, kiss me goodbye im defying gravity and you cant hold me down!

omg you guys are awesome! haha. and lilraverboi, your amazing haha. your tutorials are the best haha. and i love how you use sock poi and you dont crack your glowsticks. as a beginner i find it REALLY hard to watch how to do weaves or even spins when the sticks are glowing. the lights are too distracting haha. Theres so many great tutorials and threads to check out! i <3 you guys hahaha. thx soo much everyone for posting!! and to dg21 im using pretty thick shoe laces. and theyre not too long. i like them.
so ive noticed that stringing takes a lot of coordination! haha split time looks really hard! but practicing is fun for me. i end up spinning a lot of random stuff at random times haha. like headphone cords LOL. im gonna work on my spinning and weaving for a week or two first, before i head on to butterfly stuff. ive watched some other much more complicated moves and tutorials for fun just to see how cool they look lol. Buzzsaw..looks, so amazing. haha
anyway, THX soo much!!!
