Default Excercise ideas.... - 08-31-08, 01:32 PM

Okay, heres what I've come up with for Tut's I wanna make...

It seems most people don't really get the concept, that in order to get better, you have to do the same movements over, and over, and over, and then repeat 500 times both the opposite direction and with the other hand. And if you want to really improve, you've gotta spend hours a day doing this, NOT JUST TRICKS!! (If you do the same tricks, when will you improve?) Yes, you will get blisters (I personally use gloves when doing this)... Your hands will ache! Your stomach, back, and shoulders etc will burn!! However, EVERY day you WILL see improvements, as long as you analyze where these are needed and you force your muscles to learn along with your brain.

I'm trying to get a camera setup (yes I'll record me spinning my flow lights too,,,, but I want to contribute my ideas as TUT's) but I think I'm gonna put up tutorials on different types of EXERCISES rather than tricks (especially since most tricks have already been put up,) which in turn will help someone learn a new trick in a day once they know all the basic planes and transitions.

Whats everyone think? Analyzing tricks, from beginner to advanced, and breaking down different planes, areas to practice figure 8's, transitions, etc. (I was experimenting and practicing with different buzzsaws, flowers, and anti spin today, and kinda was brainstorming about this....)

I think the first one will be on different FIGURE 8 exercises, from front, sides, as well as the back and transitioning between forward/reverse, to waist wraps (or are they called wall planes or something? I'm not 100% sure on this terminology, where your arm reaches around...),,,,,, I've got some more ideas tho.

i think this would be great to have on here. i learn my own ways to figure out the concept but it is far to difficult to explain it in words or text. one thing that i can explain that has helped me lots is try to do any move that you are doing (example. 3beat forward weave) first be able to do it with ur eyes closed then progress to having your eyes closed and having you body faced in different directions and especially YOUR HEAD! surprisingly half the stuff i can do i wasent even able to do slopy with my head turned or tilted but once i got able to do any move fluent like this is came almost out perfectly and me not even have any idea what move i was doing. this feeling is AWSOME when you dont even know what move your spinning. all you know is that you are moving with the beat.

sounds like a great idea, and dont forget that not only do you have to do the move a zillion and one times both ways, you gotta spin as hard as possible as long as possible to build up the muscle endurance. great idea and i cant wait to see what you come up with!!!

i think i'll try defying gravity, kiss me goodbye im defying gravity and you cant hold me down!

Sounds like a cool idea. The key with tutorials is to incorporate the following things:

-Adequate lighting....so we can see all of you clearly to know what you are doing....note, the upload to YouTube somehow tends to make things darker, so be wary of this.
-Communicate your message clearly....either spoken or textual....the key is to make sure the audience knows what you are doing and why.
-Explain things thoroughly. Make sure you cover the extent of your topics rather than quickly grazing over a concept.
-Show things at various angles where applicable. Sometimes, your hand/body motions are best viewed from another angle....be sure to show this when necessary.
-Slow motion is a useful tool if you have access to it....utilize it to demonstrate complex motions effectively.
-Good overall video quality...make sure you use a decent camera to record. There's nothing worse than a good video done with a shoddy camera....kinda ruins the overall effect and usefulness.
-Attach a GXG template and you can win a awards for both YouTube promotion and GXG tutorials.

Just a few ideas to keep in mind....good luck!

I would add to bryan's suggestions - please please please practice what you are going to say before you record, and watch your vid again after. As you are learning to teach, it is INCREDIBLY common to say the word uh or um or er every other word...which makes you nearly impossible to understand, and makes it very difficult for others to benefit from your experiecne and instruction. If you need to make a piece of tagborad with an outline of what you want to say and tape it to the wall, do it.

I'm really excited for this, I think it's a fantastic idea and I can't wait to see how this develops!!!

Yeah, Sarah brings up a valid point...having a basic idea of what you want to cover in your video is key to a successful tutorial. I've been known to make a short list of items and even do a few practice runs (without filming) to see how things work/flow.

Another suggestion is to try to be brief/to the point. People will get much more from your video if they can watch it quickly. If it drags on for a long time to make a single small point, the audience loses attention. Keep in mind, this doesn't mean to be so brief that you are leaving out vital information, but just try to keep it on task. My early videos were all restricted to a 3 minute limit since that's all the camera I was using at the time would do, so they're pretty to the point. Maybe time yourself when you practice.

OH! The otehr thing to watch is the speed of your speech - and this is where watching a couple of trial runs will help. Just be sure you're speaking at a normal speed:-)

Wow, I wasn't expecting THAT many responses....

I've actually drawn more onto the ideas for a couple or few videos!

And uhhh, I've been a little busy in lala land lately and then a day or two of recovery each time (sigh,) I really need to lay off the drugs (after NOCTURNAL hahaha although I may bail and quit after this Saturday) uhhhh, I'll shut up now... lol

I'm gonna keep jotting down ideas, I was going more for an idea on visual teaching and little speech or text, but yes I'll have the entire video planned before I film anything. Then I'll have a buddy come over and we'll go through a quick and sloppy story board (lol I took basic video classes in high school) and film it in a couple or few hours, if that and it the quality will depend on how fast I get bored and how creative I get with angles.

However on the bright side, I've had probably a dozen people asking me to teach them to spin POI lately and it's really taking me back to the drawing board. I've done alot of analyzing of planes and what you have to specifically learn. I'll try to get a first video done in a week or so :-D
