Im a total noob when it comes to techno/electronic music. can anyone tell me the different sub-genres and the differences between all of them? and can anyone give me a list of good examples that show them? the only songs that I know that i absolutely love are Wavy Gravy-Sasha, Eurodancer-DJ Mangoo, and Sandstorm-Darude. Other than those, I really dont know much about techno or stuff I might like. any help is greatly appreciated! thank you!
i think i'll try defying gravity, kiss me goodbye im defying gravity and you cant hold me down!

it breaks down mainly like this:
trance:
120-150 bpm (beats per minute, the speed of the drums)
artists: paul van dyke, henry wilson, armin van buuren, sasha, tiesto, etc.
beats: four to the floor (meaning mostly kickdrums, bump bump bump)
sound: epic, grand, big-rave sound. usually either very pretty, dramatic, spacey, or all 3. sandstorm is considered trance.
house:
120-150 bpm
artists: i cant name any offhand but theres a million.
beats: four to the floor (kik-snare-kik-snare, bump tiss bump tiss bump tiss)
sound: mostly very dancy, fun, upbeat, bouncy, simple. also common in non-rave music, such as 70's disco and remixes of pop songs from the radio.
breaks:
120-150 bpm
artists: dj icey, baby anne, waldo, simply jeff, far too loud, dj x, rick west
beats: hip-hop beats but faster, lots of beat variation. (boom, tat...boom-tat)
sound: all kinds. this one has maybe the mosts styles besides dnb.
(technically, you can play trance breaks and house in the same set because they share the same beats per minute.)
drum n' bass/jungle
165-185 bpm
artists: me, dieselboy, andy c, dara, ak1200, LTJ bukem, roni size, etc.
beats: really fast (exactly twice the speed of most hip-hop, so a lot of hiphop is mixed with it) and ranging from very dirty to very clean, but usually very complicated regardless of style.
sound: all over the place. just like breaks but faster. any other kind of music usually has a dnb counterpart.
(on a side note, most of the world called dnb "breakbeat" for about 10 years until americans turned breakbeat into something else. like most of the world calls soccer "football" and here, football is a different sport.)
dubstep
50-70 bpm (SLOW as hell)
artists: caspa & rusko, enei, tech itch, bulletproof (most dnb artists are making this now also)
beats: very minimal, slow and long (boom......tat........boom.........tat)
sound: slow dnb. lots of techy stumbles and echoes.
hardcore/gabba
180-200 bpm
artists:?
beats: four on the floor but FAST (basically its super-fast house/trance)
sound: usually dark, but there is also "happy hardcore" which is very upbeat and candy. this is the fastest shit out there.
trip hop/downtempo
100-120 bpm
artists: dj vadim, dj krush, etc.
beats: just like 90's hiphop. very boom-bap beats, simple.
sound: chill, easygoing, personal-time. smooth, relaxing instrumental hip hop.
ambient/experimental: everything else.
and then each one of those has it's own sub genre's

i should also point out that EVERYTHING in that list has sub-genres, and about 50 different kinds. thats just the main kinds. almost all electronic music will fit into breaks, house, dnb, or trance. thats 96% of electronic music. the rest will fit into downtempo, experimental, etc.
like he said, i didnt put hardstyle, ive never even heard of that. its probably a subgenre of breaks or something.
for instance, with dnb you have:
jungle
drum n' bass
liquid
techstep
jump-up
intelligent
ragga
hardstep
drumfunk
and dnb is only like 5% of electronic music.

as far as hardstyle goes, it all basically follows the same pattern.
distorted heavy kicks: boom boom boom boom,
distorted basslines: boom ee boom ee boom ee
claps, snares, all 4 to the floor shit
and then a lead synth thrown in with a weird melody, usually a little darker sounding.
people like to say there's a difference between hardstyle and hardcore, but its just different countries call it different things. for instance, hardcore artists in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, would be considered "gabber", or "gabba" when compared to UK hardcore.
gabber music is like hardcore x10. its characterized by incredibly heavy kicks that are overdriven to the point that they have a melodic tone that changes with the rest of the song. it basically makes your head want to explode in a good way!
some badass hardstyle artists: showtek, tatanka, zany, alpha twins, brennan heart (might not have spelled that one right)
crazy gabber shit: angerfist, art of fighters, noize supressor, (something like that) delta 9
