i like the 3.5 ft but its all preference of your own comfort, the longer will be heavier and slower, but easier to wrap around your body, more artsy as well IMO, 3.5 is kinda in the middle so you can go slow or quick

Hm, I want to get into staffing as well...Ill let you know what length I like if I get a set before you.
Disclaimer: Everything i say is wrong. I like to argue because I think it's dumb to watch everything you say because you're scared of offending someone who's over-sensitive. I'm very sarcastic, people tend to take offense quickly to random things I say, I have a sense of humor and I apologize for it.
Happy?

I fire staff, and when I was in an academy I learned to use the bo staff... Which is pretty much the same thing except both ends don't let on fire...And it's not a rule, by like a generality...Like there is no rule on length of strings, but the general rule is you should be able to wrap around your hands twice and catch it, but that's not a RULE.. I learned that the rule of thumb for staffing is generally they should be as long as your arm length stretched out....But again, it's not a 'THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO DO IT' rule, it's just a guideline, but you can have it w/e length you want... My arm length worked well for me and it's where I'm comfortable.

could you be more specific what you mean by arm length, case my arm span is about 6ft however i feel that would be a huge staff, i feel its most comfortable for me if i hold the center of the staff, it should just about reach my shoulder, like the recommended poi length. however yes you are correct with the fact that there is no rule.

Spread your arms in opposite directions...Don't stretch them out like you're trying to reach out, but just the length of your arms from hand to hand, or wrist to wrist...Generally that's around the right size for most people...but like I said, it's like the saying about stringing, they should be able to wrap around your hand twice and you catch them, it's not a rule, but merely a guideline and suggestion for someone to try...I've seen people use WAY long staffs, and way short ones, so it's w/e you like...My goal size is around the bottom of one wrist to the bottom of other...

Oh, and my knowledge of staffs does not come from fire staffing, it comes from self defense training with a bo staff...So maybe holding it to in the middle and it reaching the shoulder could be for fire poi, but when I was in self defense, we used around our arms length...Because self defense with a bo staff invovles a lot of things, but there are some moves that involve strikes to the ankle or head, or something pivotol like that, and it's a lot easier when you hold it in a ready position, if the staff is long enough to already be near the floor...So that could just be a guideline for self defense use, and not necessarily spinnnin...I only fire staff because it's so much like a bo staff I'm already fairly good at it.
