poi as an exercise -

has anyone else thought of this before? particularly with heavier stuff like fire poi and stuff like that. like i've noticed practicing certain moves kinda strengthens certain parts of the body. when i couldn't get btb crossers and meltdowns and i was practicing them all the time, my abs got all sore, and obviously your arms get a lot of work haha. so yeah any thoughts on this?

to my understanding it was orginally used as a exercise for dexterity and coordination...though if u want a really bitchen workout how about throwen some 5 pound ball weights on the end of some chain...NOTE! this is a horrible idea and you probably will get hurt if u try it so dont lol

I practice poi every day just to get exercise, probably the main reason I've been sticking to it. added rice to add weight, probably about 2lbs (not only rice, got some small weights in the middle, then surrounded by rice) each, helps alot with the muscle memory. i usually practice for an hour to an hour and a half 3-4 times a day

Poi is actually wonderful exercise in several fashions...
It's good for your mind because it improves your hand eye coordination...
And it's absolutely WONDERFUL for your shoulders if you use them, because any movement that is constant and moves the ball and socket joint around it's movement capabilities, keeps it in shape and makes the glide easier...
That and if you have actual poi and not glowstrings, like it won't build your arms up, but it will help definition wise... You might end up with the same amount of muscle on your arm, but it can become defined much more defined, therefore looking bigger...
I know right before I started poi, I remember how my arms look, and now after doing it for a while, my arms look much tougher...
I don't think I gained that much muscle, I think it's just because I do so much poi that it exercises the muscles enough to define them, but not build them up.
That and poi is great for loosening up the tendons in your wrist.

A long time ago, way before most of the people that are on here were on here, like when I first signed up, I had a great post about shower raving...
You want an awesome lil time and make your showering more fun?
Play some of ur fav techno and go into the shower, moiston your body, then soap yourself up, and freehand trace across your body...
Thus, Shower raving... And it's good to keep your joints loose for actual poi...

Rawr....shower raving, huh? Sounds hot! LOL.
Yeah, poi can be a great exercise. If you spin hardcore for 20+ minutes, it counts as a cardiovascular work-out. It's good for working on the range of motion of your body, strengthening stabilizer muscles, increasing flexibility, burning calories and gaining coordination. All around, a good thing for your body. Plus, if you do a lot of UTL stuff like me, it works on your balance as well.
Feel the beat from start to stop, dancin' and groovin' from bottom to top!

when I started spinning regualurly again, I noticed that I had better muscle mass and tone in my arms within a couple of weeks, my ab strength got better, and I slept better at night. Here's the otehr thing - I have a lot of old chronic injuries to my shoulder and knees and back from work and dancing for so long...spinning has really helped with teh maintainence of those injuries and keeps me in much better shape overall:-) it's happy:-)
