Kaleidoscope – Tiesto

Hold on…We waited how long? For THIS? Tiësto’s new album leaves a little something to be desired…

Tiesto releases Kaleidoscope

I don’t know if it was the long wait from ‘Elements of Life’, or what, but I was expecting a lot from Mr. Tijs Verwest/Tiësto via Kaleidoscope.  He’s been all but dormant for two years, and you’d think with all of that time, the most epic masterpiece was in production.  But alas, masterpiece isn’t what I’d call it.  Rather, a “master piece“, if you catch my drift.  The album left me questioning the what happened the last hour and thirteen minutes of my life–because I seriously could not remember.  There are really only three songs that sound like something Tiesto would produce. And you can’t even attempt to look at the track list without being a tad bit confused.  Nelly Furtado… with Cary Brothers… with Dizzee Rascal!?   All the collaborations seem to over shadow the DJ we’ve all followed for so many years.  I hate to be the one to say it, but it’s really just an all pop album with electronic undertones.

First of all, the choices that were made for the female vocalists were aimed towards an entirely different scenester audience.  Emily Haines of Metric, Kianna of Tilly and the Wall, Tegan and Sara, Priscilla Ahn, are all names in the indie-rock music genre, so their collaboration is arguably lost on the trance audience. Their voices aren’t shown justice on the songs they are a part of. And since they aren’t trance voices, their performances are merely adequate and thus their presence on the album is easily forgotten.

I would be very surprised if the song with Nelly Furtado, ‘Who Wants To Be Alone’, is not released, because it is certainly top 40 radio friendly–and I’m not sure if that makes me want to smile or cry.  I am aware that artists change their sound over the course of time, but I feel kind of blind-sighted by this one.  There is no transition from ‘Elements’ to this.  There are about three sole trance songs on this album, everything else is just trance… ish.

I fear that this will be a trend of the older artists trying to stay afloat today.  First David Guetta simplified his sound to appeal to a wider audience.  And Tiësto is following suit, but did he really need to? Is this the beginnings of a reinvented DJ? I realize I just talked down about “the great and powerful Oz”, so I’m ready for the hate mail, but if you have heard the album,  share your thoughts! I’d love to know what you guys think.

I agree that Tiesto is taking a pop route, but so are alot of artists. It seems that it is not just about the music anymore and more trying to reach a broader audience and selling out. However, I actually really enjoy a few songs on this album. Century is cool but that could just be because I like calvin harris, louder than boom is sick, organised chaos I really like. Escape me, you are my diamond, and its not the things you say are are all really poppy but not that bad in retrospect.

Overall it’s depressing, but once you get away from the fact that this a sell-out album it still retains some of Tiesto’s traditional magic =D.

To the author: I never was a big fan of the “omchee omchee” style/trance in general. But then one day, long ago in a galaxy far away… a friend gave me a copy of “Just Be.” Simply an amazing cd from start to finish. That cd took some care and thought in producing. In fact, I still listen to it (when no one else is present ha). Afterwards, still never became a diehard fan of the Dutchman Mr. T. For giggles, decided to read other reviews and listen to previews of this current cd. Nothing truely moved me, and it is just about everything you said in your review. Someone else claimed it was “experimental” but to me..that is such a pretty word and improper usage. Mr. T is either selling out, or making music that he truely wanted to make long ago, but never could. And if that is the case, he was just a bad dj all the while.
Guess you get to live another day and write another review (the author)….you won’t hear much hatorade email from me bub.
